Would you rather hunt with a shotgun,22 cal. or a bb/pellet gun?And why?When you're hunting squirrels......?
An air rifle is good to kill squirrels. It's quiet and the rest of the squirrels won't run off to the next county like they will with a rifle or shotgun. Your best bet is a serious air rifle with a high velocity like over 800fps. Also, if you're hunting somewhere where you're not supposed be hunting, you're less likely to be caught with an air gun, especially a pistol. that you can shove into your jacket and hide if you have to. Use a two hand hold and a good stance with it when shooting like this:

A .22 rifle has an advantage of hitting a lot harder than an airgun. You can shoot from farther away as well. Also, you can use lower power subsonic rounds and shotshells made specifically for it.
A shotgun has an advantage of throwing a lot of lead at the squirrel. That can mean however that there's not going to be a lot of meat left if that's your goal. I'd say a 410 or 28 gauge would be appropriate.
Another option you didn't mention is a bow and arrow with small game points like these.

Actually I use both depending on the time during the season. When lots of leaves are on the tree, I will use a shotgun. Once the leaves fall , I will use a rifle with a scope.
Leaves can hide a squirrel pretty easy and you may only see the tail or tip of the nose. If you are close, a shotgun will make a clean kill.
I can see most of the whole squirrel later in the season and then I can take a little longer shots by using the .22 rifle.
.22, since it helps me practice shooting.
A strong pellet gun at close range will work in a pinch if trying to control tree rats around the house when they become pests. It only takes killing one or two of 'em with the pellet rifle and the ';gang o' squirrels'; figures out it's better to spend time elsewhere.
Shotguns work fine too...good practice too...but you don't get much meat for the price of a shell! A .22 is much cheaper to use.
Either a .22 LR or a shotgun. I have used both.
The .22 is better for making clean head shots so you do not damage the meat.
A shotgun is better for multiple moving targets (squirrels running through mature tree tops). Just make sure to remove all the pellets before cooking.
Primarily a .22LR or .22WMR but only ground shots or where I am shooting against the main trunk of the tree. Otherwise I use a shotgun for safety issues.
The rifle makes for a cleaner shot where you don't have to go hunting for the lead shot before you cook it.
A few questions.
Are you just killing or hunting to eat?
Is there any danger of a 22 bullet returning to earth and hitting someone or a residential area?
Is noise an issue?
A 20 guage usually blows them out of the tree.
.22, it's doesn't do the damage of the shotgun and kills the squirrel cleanly, unlike the bb gun.
A .22 because it kills them cleanly especially if you are hunting for meat not to kill.
Duhhh? bb gun?....
Shotgun has always been my choice for squirrel. Higher success rate!
