Can a beagle be trained to hunt squirrels?

I once had two beagles. I took one of them and trained him to hunt squirrels. He would trail and bark on the trail, and when he treed his bark would change in tone letting you know he treed. But here is the problem. There was no way I could get him to stay with the tree. You could kill the first squirrel he treed, but as you took the time to find and shoot the squirrel, the dog would be off and hunting again just as quick as he could. And you could hear him treeing as he hunter through the woods but you had no idea what trees he was treeing up. You had to see him tree the squirrel or you didn't know. It is just in their blood to trail game, not to tree it. It is a waste of time to attempt it. The beagle can hunt almost anything that does not go up a tree. They make great deer dogs. They do not make a squirrel dog!Can a beagle be trained to hunt squirrels?
Yes! Beagles around here in WV are generally used for rabbit hunting but can be trained to hunt squirrels. I have hunted with a few beagles that were great squirrel dogs.

It is all in the training and what you want to train the beagle to hunt. Down south they use them for deer hunting but generally beagles are used for rabbit hunting.

Nothing like the bark of a beagle on a cool autumn day sounding off on a squirrel trail or a tree squirrel.

Some people even use coon/bear hounds for squirrel hunting. So about any dog that can hunt can be trained for the game your wanting to hunt. Can a beagle be trained to hunt squirrels?
Of course. You don't even have to train it. Just get it out in the woods and it will chase squirrels, and most likely bark when they have been treed.
