Can u squirrel hunt all year long?

what are the seasons to squirrel huntingCan u squirrel hunt all year long?
Check your local game laws to see if you can and if you can't find out what you can hunt year round. But in most states squirrel season starts in September.South Carolina's squirrel season starts on October 1st and ends March 1st.Can u squirrel hunt all year long?
no you cant

there's a season for squirrel just like there is a season for deer, hog, coon, possum, dove, bear, crow, etc..

you could hunt them all year, but it's illegal, and doing it all year round, you have a higher chance of getting pests on you like fleas and ticks and maybe intestinal parasites b/c during the winter, majority of those types of pests are killed off cause of how cold it gets and hunting animals out of season gives hunters a bad name
if your in the USA, you need to take a hunters safety course and they will give you a run down of your local hunting seasons! then you'll need your hunting license! then follow the laws and be a good sportsman and set a good example!
usually in the fall during the spring they have babies and have all kinds of parasites in the spring and summer

that's why hunting season is in the fall

normally starts in september
No. Usually the season will break during mating season and while the females are raising their young. Typically the season ends in the spring and picks up again in the fall.

Please, don't ever poach.
You need to tell us where you are. All States have their own laws. You can search the internet for hunting regulations for your State.

In Oklahoma the season is May 15 - Jan. 31
Not with real gun like .22 and shotguns but I shoot ground squirrels in my back yard year round with a high power pellet gun. Hey at least I have an excuse, I'm doing varmint control on my yard.
Yes.... but I recommend that you to do it only during the approved hunting season in the state that you plan on hunting.
As long as you don't get caught.

Ain't nothin' illegal if you don't get caught, as my uncle always said.

What is small game? ( i got a squirrel gun and a 270 win i can hunt with?

the squirrel gun is a 22 i think

i got my hunting license and it says i can hunt small game until march 31 2009 and i wanted to go turkey hunting is that small game??

also what else is small game i know rabbits squirrels birds but what else? What is small game? ( i got a squirrel gun and a 270 win i can hunt with?
yes the 'squirrel gun' is probably a 22LR and a MUCH better choice for small game than a 270 winchester.

Turkey are NOT considered small game

rabbits, squirrels, raccoon, possum, those are all small game

birds like pheasant and quail are considered 'upland birds' and will require an additional stamp to hunt, normally with a 12 guage

birds like ducks and geese are considered 'migratory waterfowl' and will require a 'duckstamp' to hunt normally with a 12 gauge

NOTE, you may get a small game license that is good all year round, however, certain species are usually only allowed to be hunted during different seasons.

For instance, here in MN if you have a small game license you can hunt rabbits from mid september to mid febuary, and the same small game license allows you to hunt racoons from mid october to mid march. You couldn't hunt rabbits in july, even though you have a small game license.

Also, here in MN we have a combo small game and furbearer license, which allows you to hunt beaver, bobcat, and fox as well as the traditional small game animalsWhat is small game? ( i got a squirrel gun and a 270 win i can hunt with?
Sounds like you better go to hunter education class before you do any hunting.

It is required in every state I am sure.

If you do have a small game license and have passed hunter course,

then make sure you are familiar with what you can hunt and when before you go.

Also get used to your guns, and always remember Safety First!
be careful, there could be a different lisence for birds and small game. check with your local DOW or go to any retailer that sells the lisences, they should have a brochur that will tell you the diffenrent laws.
go for pheasants. they are birds. and you could sell each of them for probably 100$ each becuz the feathers of it are used to make flies for fishing, but im not sure if its illegal to sell them.and how old r u?

Is it legal to hunt for squirrels in Massachusetts without a small game licence?

I need to know if i can go deep in the woods and hunt for squirrel without a licence in MassachusettsIs it legal to hunt for squirrels in Massachusetts without a small game licence?
Just because you go deep into the woods the law does not change!

Squirrels are considered small game and hence are regulated, with specific seasons and require hunting licences to huntIs it legal to hunt for squirrels in Massachusetts without a small game licence?
NO, No, no
I would think that you need a license no matter where you hunt.
you must have a license to hunt and it must be in season
yes, squirrels fall under small game.

Best way to squirrel hunt?

Does anyone know the best way to hunt for these elusive little rodents in Kansas? I went out today and didn't even see a nest.Best way to squirrel hunt?
Derek,

Aside from Dove and Quail, you're talking my favorite type of hunting. I have hunted the little Pine Squirrels in the Lincoln Forest of NM, the big Tassel eared squirrels in the Gila Wilderness and the Red and Grey's of Arkansas.

I am betting you're hunting Grey's and Reds. I have a bunch on and around my property and I do love studying the critters (and eating them). I can tell you that Reds and Grays are pretty much alike in their feeding and movement habits. They are busy right now gathering nuts. If you can find a native Pecan that still has Pecans in it, just find a spot to hide and sit. Two things that say you're in squirrel country is oak trees and nearby water.

Hunting squirrel alone is different that with a partner. Alone it is move and sit, move and sit, but mostly sit. If you find a food source, like a clump of Oaks just sit down and relax. If you have a call now is the time to use it. I have learned to make the bark sound with my mouth and can get them in. They are curious critters and your call doesn't have to be perfect. A rapid chatter, like when one is warning off another who is getting too close. If you don't have a call don't worry about it. Just wait. Camo is preferred and wear snake boots if you're out this early.

The problem with moving around hunting when you're alone is that squirrels hide on the opposite side of the tree till you pass. So when you sit and wait, the ones hiding will eventually come out and look around. You may be surprised at how many there are once you sit for a while.

The pros to hunting with a friend or a dog is that you can move around more and stay far enough away that you can see opposite sides of the trees. Thus when a squirrel moves around to hide, one of you sees it. If you have a dog who has alerted on a squirrel in a tree you move to the opposite side of the tree where it will be hiding from the dog.

You have to remember that they forage on the ground also, in order to gather nuts and acorns that have fallen, so don't always be looking up. They also like specific trails through the trees where branches are touching. I remember many years ago, accidentally finding a spot where they were crossing a wide trail by using some long branches from each side that were touching. A friend and I ambushed that trail all morning and both bagged out. They will do that crossing over small streams also. So squirrel hunting is about observation and the old art of stalking, which you'll never learn hunting from a tree stand. E-mail me if you have any other questions.Best way to squirrel hunt?
Like most have said, find a food source, but just because you have found one doesn't mean you will see any. The best way to tell if it is an active area is to look around for half eating acorns or other nuts, also if you hunt in an area with lots of pines look for pine combs that have been stripped to the core. Once you have found an area like this you should have alot of luck.
In the Mid-Atlantic states, the leaves are just starting to turn colors. They will start to be active now that we've had a a few days of cold weather. They really don't run around much until it gets cold and the acorns start falling from the trees...or the farmers start picking their feed corn and leaving bits of it behind. But, of course, the best time is early November when the leaves are off the trees and you can see them better.
find the food source, camp and pop those things as they come by,

make a food source and use glue traps to trap those things as they come buy (still targets are easier to hit than moving ones)

observe their routine for a week, then bring out the shotgun to blow those things away where you know they'll be at a specific time.
Hunt slow, hunt quiet, sit for periods with good camo on, when walking, take one step and stand still five steps.( old Indian saying about deer stalking- works good on squirrels too.
* Spot and Stalk them, or Still hunt them.*
Find their food source (trees producing/bearing nuts) and then wait under/near those trees. Odds are that you'll see squirrels shortly that way when they come to feed.
You have to find their food supply. I like hunting with a .22 short hollow point on a foggy morning with a little rain to cover my noise.
Try getting a call.

What type of weapon/ammo do you like to use when you hunt small game, such as rabbit and squirrel??

12 or 20 gauge with 6 shot What type of weapon/ammo do you like to use when you hunt small game, such as rabbit and squirrel??
Most people use a shotgun anywhere from a ..410 to a 12. The name says it all shot. Naturally, shotguns give you a better chance of hitting your target because you have more than one projectile although with a little practice a .22 rifle can be equally effective for hunting rabbit or squirrel but you have to be aware of what is beyond your target moreso with a .22 rifle than a shotgun because the .22 can travel up to a mile and still be lethal where as the shotgun with # 6 shot can only be lethal up to 50 yards or less.

for rabbit and squirrel I always use # 6 shot. If you use any smaller shot size you may find yourself with a tooth ache, biting down on shot is not at all plesant. Always remember, the smaller the shot, the more shot you have in a shotshell and the less penetrating power you have. Because rabbit and squirrel are fairly larger game than quail or dove, you need a little more hard hitting power and that is where the 6's come in. They don't have the velocity of 7 1/2 or 8 but they hit harder. You don't need high velocity to kill a rabbit or a squirrel.

Any Brand of .22 long rifle ammo will be effective for taking small game. My choice is Winchester Super Points (also known as hollow points), But Remington also has superp .22 long rifle ammo.

Rabbit and Squirrel can be very elusive even when wounded. It is in your best intrest to respect the animals you hunt and aways try to take them cleanly and as quickly as possible. Using small shot to hunt these animals will more than likey mortally wound them but allow them to escape and die later.

All in all good sportsmanship determines a good hunter from a bad hunter. Respect the animals you hunt, abide by the laws or your hunting area, and most importantly: Be Safe and encourage others to be safe as well.

good hunting and good luck. What type of weapon/ammo do you like to use when you hunt small game, such as rabbit and squirrel??
To me it depends on the weather and my mood. If snow is on the ground, I would use my 22 rifle on rabbits, they tend to run and sit when you kick one up. Then pick him off. But if its clear and I'm hunting in the sticks I like to use my shotgun. 12 ga pump Mossberg, also since I am usually shooting in the air at squirrels in a tree, I tend to favor the shotgun as well if nothing else for safety. Its possible to miss and that 22 can travel a long distance in the air. Shotgun shot does not go that far and gives me piece of mind when shooting skyward. You should always know what is in front of your muzzle.
in the fall ...with leafs and ground cover... good 12 or 20 g shotgun.... rabbits and tree rats-#6 low brass

After the leafs fall ... .22 for squirrels... round nose lead bullets.

I have shot bunnies with the .22... but with dogs, running rabbits are a little easier to kill with a shotgun.
A 22 long Rifle, 12 or 20 gauge shotgun.* Use number 4 bird shot for rabbit, and number 6 for squirrel.*
Ruger 10/22 .22LR rifle with either Remington 36 grain hollow point or Federal 36 grain hollow point.
I use a 12 gauge Remington 1100 with either #6 or #8 shot. Although a 20 gauge is just as good on small game.
Dynamite, followed only by a howitzer.
i have used everthing from a .22 all the way up to a .270 but i myself like to use a 12 gauge pump shotgun
17 HMR in a Marlin, good up to about 300 yards on the silly wabbit

  • Can you hunt any kind of squirrel in western washington?

call the DEC in your area or check out there websiteCan you hunt any kind of squirrel in western washington?
no, you can hunt only the living ones

Is a .17hmr or a .22lr better for hunting rabbits, squirrels, and coyotes?

i live in tennesseeIs a .17hmr or a .22lr better for hunting rabbits, squirrels, and coyotes?
Dont hunt a coyote with a .22LR. The .22WMR is a better option.

That aside, I really like the .17HMR. You need to get within 200 feet of coyote or so, but the cartridge is very accurate and has enough power to drop coyote and anything smaller. There wont be much left of a squirrel hit with a .17 HMR though. Is a .17hmr or a .22lr better for hunting rabbits, squirrels, and coyotes?
22LR is better for rabbits and squirrels simply because it is more economic meaning you can practice more on tin cans

the 17 HMR is better on yotes, the 22LR just doesn't have yote killing power much beyond spitting distance. The 17 HMR will reach out further, but really not a ton further, definately don't try a yote that is more than 75 yards away.
.17 or .22 is fine for squirrels or rabbits, but generally won't get a quick kill on a coyote unless you use hollowpoints or a pretty ';hot'; .22 round.

If you get a decent ';torso'; shot on a coyote with a .22 LR, up to about 50 yards, the coyote will probably die, eventually -- but won't drop right away.
I would go with the .22 for squirrels and rabbits, the ammo is easier to come by and much cheaper than .17 ammo.

Both the .22 and the .17 are too low powered for a humane kill on a coyote, a .22 Mag is marginal.

    .
.17 and a 22 is great for rabbits and squirrels but you CANNOT kill a yotey with a .22 at distance 15yrds unless its a point blank headshot which will never happen.

Is hunting grey squirrels legal in the UK?

It sure is legal. You should do your best to kill by whatever legal means as many as possible. Last year I shot and trapped 110 tree rats.Is hunting grey squirrels legal in the UK?
The best method of Grey Squirrel control is the Kania Trap 2000. It is effective, humane kill, no re-locating. Place the trap 5-7 feet above the ground on a tree trunk, under eves, or in an attic away from children and non- target species. Best bait is peanut butter, or nuts in their shells. Is hunting grey squirrels legal in the UK?
    Yes.

Greys are considered a pest and can be shot, baited or caught. They are also a real threat to birds as they eat their eggs.

They don't taste very good either - a bit like the greasy, sinewy bits of chicken that you leave on your plate!
shoot as many as poss they are vermin a tree rat, you will be fined or charged for killing of red squirrels as they are protected, but whack those grays.
hunting greys are legal, black and red squirells qare illegal.

    personally i hate greys!

stupid yank squires ruining the reds :@

    lol
Yes you can hunt grey squirrels just not the red ones because they are endangered.
    Ask the local hunting division.
Don't think so. They are not endangered the red ones are.
i think its ok to hunt the grey 1s but not the red 1s.
Yes you can hunt greys, but not red.
Yes, they are classed as vermine in the UK
    Yes. They're classed as vermin.
no but you can shoot them if their killing red squirrals as their killing all the red squirrels :)
nope they are an endangered species

An owl is chasing a squirrel and is using echolocation (the reflection of sound) to aid in the hunt?

If the squirrel is 48.3 m from the owl, how long does it take sound to travel from the owl to the squirrel and then back to the owl? (Use 343 m/s as the speed of sound in air.)An owl is chasing a squirrel and is using echolocation (the reflection of sound) to aid in the hunt?
Distance equals time multiplied by the rate of travel. (D=RT)

    T=D/R

48.3m/343m/s=approx. 0.14 seconds if I've made no mistake.

I just bought a Savage .17 HMR, I plan on hunting ground squirrels. What size scope should I get?

Depends on how far away you plan to shoot, under 50 yards a good all around 4x would be fine, under 100 yards may want a variable powered scope, say a 3-9 or 4-12 if you are shooting beyond 100 a 4-12 to 6-18 power would work out well. Just buy a quality brand IE Nikon, Burris, Leopold. there are cheaper scopes than these but you get want you pay for in optics. My experience has been that Nikon offers the brightest image and clearest lenses for the money. Brightness pay dividends in lower light conditions, and Tasco and Simmons just don't have what it take in low light or clarity.I just bought a Savage .17 HMR, I plan on hunting ground squirrels. What size scope should I get?
You dont need a scope.........you are hunting squirrels.........not elk at 500 yards away. Use the iron sights....once you get used to it.....its the best.....most reliable way.I just bought a Savage .17 HMR, I plan on hunting ground squirrels. What size scope should I get?
A red dot scope gives you parallax free sighting.
Get a BSA Sweet 17 scope. I have a 2x7, but they have all the way up to 6x18. It depends on how far away you want to shoot the squirrels, but a 2x7 should do the trick. It works pretty good on armadillos.
I would use a 4x40 scope, just one of the cheaper brands like Tasco. This is what I have on one of my .22's for small game.

They make some small 3x20 scopes for .22's, but I like a bigger view, so it is easier to follow something that is on the move.
You can get the nikon prostaff 3x9 for under 150 or around there, I think cost is about 130.
If you use a scope at all, there are plenty of low-power scopes on the market designed for use with 22's. There's certainly no reason to get anything more than a fixed-four.
I prefer my sights on my .22 for squirrel hunting but if you insist on a scope a fixed 4x should work out fine.
For those of you recommending him to stay with the open sights, as of 2006, Savage didn't make a .17 HMR with open sights. While normally an advocate for higher end optics on a rifle, on a .17hmr I would, (and did), buy a BSA Sweet 17. The lack of recoil in the 17 makes some of the concerns about an inexpensive scope fade away. The range in power, and the calibrated elevation adjustments give you the ability to do some pretty long range target shooting. I put a 3-12x40 on my Savage 93R17-BTVS, and have used it both in the woods for rabbits, and at the range to plink. The clarity and light gathering is not quite as good as it's higher priced counterparts, but is more than adequate for what you want it for. For right around $100, you can't go wrong. Good luck, and have fun.
A good varmint scope would be a .32 mm try it and see

I live in a urban area and hunt squirrels with my bow in my yard. I bait them with acorn. how can i shoot more?

I put a tree stand in a tree and expect to shoot no more than 15 yards. We have a lot of squirrels in our area. I want to know how i can shoot a few more.I live in a urban area and hunt squirrels with my bow in my yard. I bait them with acorn. how can i shoot more?
i hope you are shooting down at the grass. dont shoot your arrows at trees, you can have bad richochet or ruin your arrows.

if you want to shoot more, set up several different bait piles. that way when you drop one squirel on one bait, there are still a few more baits left untainted. eventually, the squirels will figure you out though, and you will have to move your stand and baits, or retrieve each squirel one at a time. the best way is to use a benjamin pellet gun, with a scope.

also, try a squirel call, it looks like a piece of wood with a rubber nob on top, but they work like magic. those squirels cant resist to come running to the call. its pretty funny, i didnt think it would work so good.I live in a urban area and hunt squirrels with my bow in my yard. I bait them with acorn. how can i shoot more?
Bird seed and Walmart sells a squirrel feeder that you can hang in a few trees around your stand. Then put out traps all around your neighborhood and catch and release them near your house , this should keep you busy for awhile.
set a lot of little cage traps with the acorns, and leave them overnight. then you can start your day with a few easy headshots to warm up. your hit percentage should go up, too. should.
The best way to increase your shooting opportunities, is to bait with whole kernal corn. Squirrel's can't seem to leave it alone.
First-I do not think hunting of any form is legal in any city limits.

    You should consider that first.

Seems like squirrels cannot leave bird feeders alone.
    Automatic Rifle
BB Gun or 22., You must be quite a marksmen to hit squirrels with a bow.....
Isn't it illegal to bait and shoot? It is in my state....
You hunt squirrels with a bow?
    .....ok.

maybe you should lure then with peanut butter.

  • Hunting Squirrels with a pellet gun/ bb gun?

alright i just want a straight forward answer. I have a crosman G1 extreme pellet gun. I am using ballistic tipped pellets... they are .177 caliber. can i kill a squirrel in one shot because that was why the gun was bought. We enjoy having birds around so we have 2 or 3 feeders by our back porch that get Absolutely demolished by squirrels. They are probably 4 or 5 squirrels at a time. The only problem is that my dad bought the pellet gun to shoot them when he sees them and finds fit. I have a air soft sniper that well im not gonna lie. Its pretty damn nice. It does about 450 fps. I use .24 precision bbs. I have hit the squirrel everywhere from the head to the tail and they wont die.

So i guess my questions are:

    1. will an air soft sniper kill it (p.s im getting metal hunting bbs that are pretty heavy i think .40 grams

( i take the shot anywhere from 7 feet to 20)

also will it require hunting bbs

    2. will a pellet gun like that take em out instantly?

sorry for the long questions but theres a lot of detaill.

thanksHunting Squirrels with a pellet gun/ bb gun?
    Q. I have a crosman G1 extreme pellet gun. I am using ballistic tipped pellets... they are .177 caliber. can i kill a squirrel in one shot because that was why the gun was bought.

    A. Provided you take the shot at a reasonable range (30 yards or less) and you put the pellet into either the head or heart/lung cavity, yes your gun will kill squirrels.

    Q. will an air soft sniper kill it (p.s im getting metal hunting bbs that are pretty heavy i think .40 grams

    A. Airsoft guns use rubber BBs. They won't kill anything. Last I checked airsoft guns used 6mm airsoft BBs and won't chamber/fire .177 caliber steel BBs.Hunting Squirrels with a pellet gun/ bb gun?

If you're using JSB Predators (?) **These pellets have widely varied results, some rifles shoot them very accurately, others do not...If you're not getting, at a minimum, 3 shot 1in groups at 30 yards, you really need to find a pellet that's more accurate in your rifle %26gt;The G1 Xtreme is fully capable of 1/2in - 3/4in 3 shot groups at 30 yards

-sure it will-when i was younger i used to shoot birds and squirrels with a 760 pumpmaster (i know its not your gun but thats what i used, your gun is probably better)with .177 pellets(sucked to pump it up and load a pellet each time but worked great)get ya a nice little scope and sight it in-with a head shot (or a good chest shot) it will take out your pesky squirrel problem
yes you should be able to, a head shot should do fine, i'm blasting squirrels at 45+ yards with my big cat 1200, just use pellets that are around 8 grs. and you'll be fine
Just remember to eat what you kill- squirrels are a game species, and you need a license.
Air soft is not meant for hunting! Stop wasting your bb's on the squirrels, and let dad take them out with the air rifle!
you do NOT have enough gun. try a .22
    lol
well with out knowing how fast your crossman is shooting. I would say yes it will kill a squirl with provision. And that is that you are relatively close and get the thing in the head or heart/lung. Nothing wrong with hitting it a couple of more times for good measure though. I used to hunt squirls with a single shot raven 177 rifle.
Airsoft will not kill a squirrel, just cause it unnecessary harm.

Some pellet guns will take them out instantly. The one you mention is not one of them. You need more power, like a 22 pellet going 900-1,000 fps, not a 177 pellet going 1,000 fps. Your gun MIGHT reach 1,000 fps with a very light pellet like a Beeman Laser. Far less from a heavier pellet.

As for accuracy\y, this Chinese gun may or may not give the consistency of shot placement you require.

You can choose a more accurate, consistent rifle like Benjamin Discovery PCP, then on top of that the increased power still means lights out squirrel for shots you were not quite ';on the mark';.

Hunting (pest) squirrels. Is i legal to hunt squirrels that are in our yard that get into the house?

we've had quite a pest problem since a tree grew next to our house.(on neighbor's property) it has brought a lot of squirrels into this house. Now there at there worst. They're making a lot of noise and probably destroying the house from the inside. Dropping nuts down vents and leaving feces all over. For the most part, they haven't come inside the house except from falling out of bathroom exhaust fans. Can i hunt them with a pellet gun or trap them? Is this legal in the state of Ohio? does anyone know what else i can do? thanksHunting (pest) squirrels. Is i legal to hunt squirrels that are in our yard that get into the house?
I'm in a different state (Texas) but when I contacted our local Structural Pest Control Board to find out what is actually legal to get rid of pest squirrels they sent me to Parks and Wildlife who emailed me a long email explaining that there is only 2 legal ways to kill squirrels since they are a game animal. The first is through legal hunting with firearms where local laws must apply (season..limits..where legal to use a fire arm)

The second way is if you are in a city you must contact the mayors office...if out of a township contact an office of the local Justice of the Peace, in which those offices contact the local game warden who will then come determine if the squirrel is a problem that needs to be put down.

The unofficial stance with every one I have talked to in person ranging from city police to game warden is that there will fall out on trapping and putting down problem squirrels on your own unless there is a complaint made by one of your neighbors.

For what it's worth my pellet gun will drop a squirrel instantly with one shot as far as 100 feet away.

My personal suggestion would be to trap with the HavaHart 1040 trap and then locate to a large garbage can filled with water.Hunting (pest) squirrels. Is i legal to hunt squirrels that are in our yard that get into the house?
Ohio regards squirrels as game and the hunting season is from Sept 1 to Jan 31.

Pest control might be your best answer, you can't legally discharge a firearm including a pellet gun in an urban area. If you should trap them indoors :o) nobody but you knows what happens after that.
get a good b-b gun and shoot them in the head...no one will be the wiser...hunt them in the attic , thats probably where they are coming in...then block all holes leading into the house...
Marcus seems to have the best answer here about the hunting season..I am in Florida now but from The Central Texas area...There you can hunt squirrels all year for it is an open season on squirrel...I was raised we ate many a squirrel and could hunt them all year long, but Marcus has seemed to find out your local laws..Now as mentioned, there are laws about discharging firearms in the city limits, and in some states this does apply to air rifles as well...But as far as this HK guy being all insultive..if you click the ';report abuse'; button next to his name..This will delete his answer..it takes two complaints to do so..I have already done so...People are not allowed to openly insult people here, nor use any discriminitive remarks like where you are from or your upbringing lifestyle..as well as being insultive to other members, we are allowed to debate and express our opinion on how we think one or the others answers are incorrect, but not just totally ';SLAM'; someone against the wall like that...Someone please click the report abuse button and get this insultive persons answer off of here..Children read these posts as well..
I would have to say that you need to check with your local game and fishing department if you can ';hunt'; squirrels.

It also depends if you live in the city limits or outside the city limits.

    You need to check that.

You can try trapping them and letting them go miles and miles away, but I do believe that they will find their way home.

You need to close off any area's in which they are getting into. Once that is closed off, they can't get back in.

Use plenty of moth balls around your house, in the attic, under the house if you have a crawl space. Moth balls WILL work.

Also go to google and type in:

    See what comes up.

If you plan on shooting them, you better make sure there are no family's near by that can get hurt. I would not recommend that.

    Best time to hunt squirrel?

What the best time to hunt squirrel when it is the morning afternoon or late afternoon and wet or dry and warm hot or chillyBest time to hunt squirrel?
I have found the best time of day is in the morning. Squirrels do not move about much if it is raining very hard. Of course, if it is raining very hard, you will not likely be out in the woods hunting them. A light drizzling rain does not seem to bother them but can make hunting them a bit dicey for the hunter. A very good time to hunt squirrels is on the first nice morning following a couple, or more, rainy days. They will have not been out hunting food as much during the inclement weather and the first nice morning, they will want get out and find something to eat. They seem to favor cool days over warm days for their forages. I guess when it is warm out, they are somewhat less active and would just as soon be in a cool place resting. Wind is your enemy. Squirrels do not like wind. I think it has to do with their ability to hear preditors.

Some calls seem to be more effective than others. I have had luck with the whistle that mimics the sound of a baby squirrel in distress. I have also had good luck using a couple of poker chips with the rough edges. I use two of them and rub them together to make the sound of a squirrel cutting nuts. Carry some hard corn in your pocket and toss a few kernals into the leaves on the ground to sound like cuttings hitting the ground. I prefer to stand next to a tree and watch for squirrels. It seems to make you blend into the surroundings better then if you were standing out by yourself.

A few additional words of advice, use camoflage, look lots and move little.Best time to hunt squirrel?
The best time to hunt squirrels is the first hour of daylight and the two hours before sunset. Hunt them during late summer and early fall for best results. They seem to like weather in the 60s - 80s. Hunt them before and directly after a rain. They will be moving in search of food, and if it is wet you will be quieter in the woods.

You can find them during this time in pecan, hickory, walnut, and later in oak trees. Listen for a grinding noise that sounds like two quarters being rubbed together (the rough sides). This is the sound of them ';cutting'; nuts. Once you locate the tree in which they are cutting, watch for tiny bits of nutshells falling. Look directly up from where they fall and you should be able to locate the squirrel. The leaves are still on this time of year so also watch for shaking leaves. If the cuttings are fresh you can sometimes smell them before you find the right tree. Take a green nut and scrape it with your knife. That is the smell you will recognize in the woods.

A shotgun is the best selection for this time of year. The squirrels tend to be moving a lot and present difficult targets in the leafy canopy. Also, there is usually more than one squirrel in a good tree. After your first shot, mark the squirrel that dropped and then wait about five minutes. If there is another squirrel in the tree, it should begin moving around again.

    Have fun.

get to your spot before the sun comes up and just sit and wait until it comes up for about 45 mins...during that time you should be able to spot some coming down from the trees and/or running around the ground to get to another tree or food source...you could wait longer if you want or just get your things and walk quitly on path ways to other big trees around you to spot them out...when it gets too warm for you, thats when they feel warm too and would be gazing the sun or digging around on the ground...some will be on the acorn trees if they are ready and others would be on the ground, either eating and digging or chasing each other around...i always like it better in the mornings becuase you get to snipe them with the 22 easier...and then its pretty much shotgun for the rest of the day....they come out hot or cold...and dry or damp...but if its too wet and cold, they would most likely still be snugged in the trees....
Just after the sun comes up in early fall and spring. Spring is not that good because you could end up separating a mom from her babies, but it is good hunting. I prefer fall because they are fat and waiting to sit on that old oak branch and catch some rays especially after a rainy night or very cold spell. Late evening is good too.
The best time is in the fall (all daylight hours, but AM and evening is best) under oak trees. They will be ';clipping'; the acorn bunches from the tree tops and letting them fall to the ground for gathering.

Just enter the area and sit quietly until you hear the clippings hit the DRY leaves and move toward the tree that they are working. You'll see 'em.

So: During the fall season, oak trees, preferably cool, dry and not windy. They hate wind!
I find the best time is any time you can hunt.Squirrel is very good eating.

Tip: Just go Time isn`t important ,but i find cool clear weather is the best

Another tip: find the food acorns, beach nuts, hazel nuts etc.

This is the best - clear cool days setting in acorns or beach nuts.
Squirrel's are pretty active most of the day but more active in the morning and afternoons warm days seem to be best.
    Mostly mornings and afternoons.*

Rat T. were bred t TREE squirrel...locate %26amp; TREE=stand at tree %26amp; BARK! until the gun is used. That's how one squirrel-hunts. NOT friggin' ';catch'; the tree rat!.

I know plenty of folks who do.

JRT were %26amp; ARE breed to work FORMIDABLE quarry IN-GROUND! NOT ';run %26amp; stick their head in a hole';!!!

GET right up to quarry %26amp; WORK it! BAY/BOLT or dispatch!.

Know plenty of real terrier-people! DO hunt/work MY terriers(NOT JRT).Does anyone have a jack russel/rat terrier mix that squirrel hunts?
Jack Russels can hunt squirrels, but they were actually bred to run into foxholes or rabbitholes. They run in, or stick thier head in, and scare the fox or rabbit out, so the hunter can shoot it. Most squirrels will head straight for the trees when they see a dog.

But they are very fast. I believe in an area without any trees near, they'd be fast enough to catch the squirrel.

I have a Jack Russel who always bolts after them, but has never caught one before it got to a tree. She has a very high prey drive for squirrels, but not for other animals. There was a wounded bird flapping on the ground right in front of her. She did nothing.

So in an open area, they will catch them. Other than that, they're not going to help.

But they are extremely smart, so you could probably teach them to track.

    Best ways to Squirrel Hunt?

What do you use to hunt squirrels? What techniques do you use?Best ways to Squirrel Hunt?
Let me first start off by replying to some of the lame responses you have received so far.

Squirrels are dumb and easy to shoot. Perhaps if they are humanized in your backyard, but real hunters know better.

Throwing popcorn out in the woods will not work and in most instances is illegal. I know here it is illegal to bait any animals to hunt.

If a squirrel is on the opposite side of a tree hiding from you, throwing an acorn on the other side will not make him pop over to your side. Throwing a stick will perhaps get him over enough to get a head shot, but you better have the rifle at the ready, any movement out of you and it will pop back over on the other side. A neat trick is to take some line to one side, tie it to a bush and then come back to the other side. Then you can wiggle the bush on the other side. The quarter idea is not money well spent :)

Thinking that squirrels see you first because they are at a higher elevation is erroneous. I have had squirrels come all the way to me through the tops of trees. Heres an idea, don't move so much. No wonder you got only two squirrels in one season of hunting. Squirrel calls don't scare the squirrels. I have used one to talk a squirrel into coming out of his hole to investigate what other squirrel was in his neighborhood.

Okay now to answer your question. There are basically three ways to hunt. Stalk, Ambush, Pattern.

Stalk is where you move slowly through an area using your eyes and ears more than your feet. Sometimes a stalk will turn into an ambush if you are stealthy enough. A good place to use a stalk is around the edge of a woods where the squirrels are going out into the field to grab an ear of corn and bring it back to their favorite tree to munch on. I have been walking past a tree only to have an ear of corn fall out. Now it is time to wait on the squirrel to move.

Ambush is when you set up in an area that the squirrels frequent. A good feeding grounds is an ideal spot. Our season here starts in mid August and from then through September I like to sit in a 20 acre pine forest I have. This is older pines, not Christmas tree pines, that most of their lower branches have died and fallen off. The squirrels love to eat the pine cones when they are still green. I like to get out there just as soon as it is light. They come in from any direction and most of the times I just have to wait until they move into range. I mark where I have one down so I don't have to move and perhaps spook any other squirrels in the area. I have shot one only to have another in a different tree start barking at me. Once I go about an hour with no action, I will relocate. Later in the year is when I hunt the ones that are feeding on acorns. I like to find a little rise and watch a group of trees rather than just one. You can check for activity by looking for acorns they have been feeding on. Another good spot is finding a location where the go out into a corn field to get ear corn.

Pattern is what I generally use in December. I try to find out at what times of the day most squirrels go out into pick corn and bean fields to feed. I get this information usually during deer season. I have found early morning, late evening and from 11-1 to be the best times. No sense waiting all day when a couple of hours will work. You will want to set up where you can cover the most area that the squirrels are using.

A 22 is my weapon of choice.Best ways to Squirrel Hunt?
cook up some popcorn and throw it in the woods then blow their brains out with a pellet / BB gun or a .22
Going for squirrel during the second season is a little eaiser concidering we now have a clearer view. Use a .22 (scopes help). I find it very hard to still hunt squirrel b/c they usally see you first being at a higher elevation. I plot myself down near some mast trees and wait. Somtimes I'm there all day and don't see one darn squirrel as if they don't exist. And go home empty handed. Sometimes I ask myself why I freez my butt off just for squirrel, but they are mighty fine tasty once cleaned and fryed up. Be pateint. When I started my first year last year I only got two out of the whole seacond season (didn't go the first). But this year I found myself taking home sometimes six a day. I use a squirrel call when it's been dead quit in the woods and I haven't seen a living thing in hours, but only then do I use a squirrel call b/c all it does is let you locate them by the call mimicing the alert sounds of a squirrel. So they don't come to you, instead they hide in the trees. Squirrels are very vocal animals and they don't take any chances. If they hear something...there gone...like dust in the wind. They do however comeback down after a while. It may take an hour though. It also seems to me when I'm hunting deer squirrels are all over the darn place and they are actully a bothersum b/c they sound like deer being so noisy scampering around looking for acorns/walnuts. But when I'm hunting for them I hardly see any lol. Just take a chair find a nice spot and sit there. They will come around. And ';don't'; be moving around be still. I find them to be most active during the wee hours of the morning and just before dark. But I still get em during the mid-day too. go to silverstreaksports for more info. Happy hunting and happy holidays. Oh...and the quarter thing, it doesn't work.
Best way I've found to attract the little tree rats is to go turkey hunting. Be all camoed out, sitting as still as possible, and the little suckers will still find you, and go nuts.
You need to find a heavy producing oak tree or tree lots. You want cooler but not windy weather. Use a squirrel call, binoculars, 22 rifle and look for their moving tails. Look in the crotches of the trees and don't forget to look on the ground. If the squirrel is on the opposite side of the tree from you, toss an acorn to the other side of the tree to entice the squire ll to come to the side you are located at. If a squirrel call is not available, cup one quarter in the palm of your hand and hit the quarter with another quarter to mimic the sound of a squirrel barking.
.22 Long Rifle. Squirrels are pretty dumb. Just find a spot with a lot of oak trees, and go plinking.

If I were hunting squirrels (gray and fox) with a .410 bore shotgun...?

What type of shotshells would you advise that I use? I am hunting the squirrels for the table, though I do take their hides/tails as well. That is a secondary concern, though.

I concentrate on headshots and I am a relatively good shot with open sights.

What do you think works ';best';?

Does it matter so much with the small .410?

I have 3 partial boxes of shells now:

    7 1/2 shot 3 inchers,

    6 shot 2 1/2 inchers,

    and 4 shot 3 inchers.

You may also advise different size/shot combinations if you like any more than those three types.

I am using a .410 because I am still somewhat sensitive to recoil, and out of the guns I have access to, it is the 'next most friendly' one to my shoulder.

The gun is a pump-action Mossberg 500 with a built-in full choke, and it will shoot either size shell that I am referring to.

Later on in the season I will be using .22 LR rifles to hunt them, but I'm already well and good with shooting those.

Thanks. If I were hunting squirrels (gray and fox) with a .410 bore shotgun...?
I used to use #6 a lot, but would ruin a lot of meat because of the amount of shot in the squirrel. I use #4 or #5 with any of my shotguns now, usually a .410 side-by-side my Grandfather gave me or a 20 ga. single shot that was the first gun he bought with his own money back in 1928. If most of your shots are close, I'd say stick with the larger shot with the full choke. You'll spoil less meat that way.

Most of the time now I use my T/C Contender 10'; .22 pistol with a 2x scope and wait for a good shot, which occasionally takes some time with most of the leaves still on the trees.

I've enjoyed squirrel hunting for 30+ years now and it's a good way to spend time in the woods to see where the deer have been moving for deer season too.

Good luck hunting and don't worry about the comments from the anti-hunters/gunners. Some people don't get it and never will.

I'm happy I was raised to be a hunter, fisherman, and camper. If I were hunting squirrels (gray and fox) with a .410 bore shotgun...?
i use a 10 guage with 00 buck shot.the only thing is i cant eat them after i shoot them, only fur left.................no but seriously i use 410 also.i use 3';#5 to shoot squirrels.i also use a 22mag,just in case i see the dreaded coyote out running around,or groundhog.........i like to keep my options open
    # 6 shot works well for me
I prefer 5 or 6 shot in 3 inch. It will reach the top of the trees better,I like 22 STINGERS for my rifles.
Some people are just sooo simple minded! I use a .22 all year long and I live in PA were there's a lot of brush. Try a scope, with it you might have better luck. I like to know how do you preserve the tail? Since you mention you do that stuff. Just go under my pro and mail me the answer. Thanks.
    im feeling squirrely
7 1/2 Shot is the smallest diameter, but with more pellets per shell- I would stick with the .22
I always use a .22 ranch rifle. I have seen people use .410s, but unless your really hungry, use the .22. It's more fun
Since you already have 3'; #4 shot, thats what i'd advise. If you decide to by shells for the .410 just for hunting, i would suggest federal 3'; # 5 shot as the best all around.Good luck, and have fun. :)

  • When you're hunting squirrels......?

    Would you rather hunt with a shotgun,22 cal. or a bb/pellet gun?And why?When you're hunting squirrels......?
An air rifle is good to kill squirrels. It's quiet and the rest of the squirrels won't run off to the next county like they will with a rifle or shotgun. Your best bet is a serious air rifle with a high velocity like over 800fps. Also, if you're hunting somewhere where you're not supposed be hunting, you're less likely to be caught with an air gun, especially a pistol. that you can shove into your jacket and hide if you have to. Use a two hand hold and a good stance with it when shooting like this:

    http://www.defensetrainingnorthwest.com/鈥?/a>

A .22 rifle has an advantage of hitting a lot harder than an airgun. You can shoot from farther away as well. Also, you can use lower power subsonic rounds and shotshells made specifically for it.

A shotgun has an advantage of throwing a lot of lead at the squirrel. That can mean however that there's not going to be a lot of meat left if that's your goal. I'd say a 410 or 28 gauge would be appropriate.

Another option you didn't mention is a bow and arrow with small game points like these.

    http://ns1.bowsite.org/acb/showdetl.cfm?鈥?/a>When you're hunting squirrels......?
Actually I use both depending on the time during the season. When lots of leaves are on the tree, I will use a shotgun. Once the leaves fall , I will use a rifle with a scope.

Leaves can hide a squirrel pretty easy and you may only see the tail or tip of the nose. If you are close, a shotgun will make a clean kill.

I can see most of the whole squirrel later in the season and then I can take a little longer shots by using the .22 rifle.

.22, since it helps me practice shooting.

A strong pellet gun at close range will work in a pinch if trying to control tree rats around the house when they become pests. It only takes killing one or two of 'em with the pellet rifle and the ';gang o' squirrels'; figures out it's better to spend time elsewhere.

Shotguns work fine too...good practice too...but you don't get much meat for the price of a shell! A .22 is much cheaper to use.
Either a .22 LR or a shotgun. I have used both.

The .22 is better for making clean head shots so you do not damage the meat.

A shotgun is better for multiple moving targets (squirrels running through mature tree tops). Just make sure to remove all the pellets before cooking.
Primarily a .22LR or .22WMR but only ground shots or where I am shooting against the main trunk of the tree. Otherwise I use a shotgun for safety issues.

The rifle makes for a cleaner shot where you don't have to go hunting for the lead shot before you cook it.
    A few questions.

Are you just killing or hunting to eat?

Is there any danger of a 22 bullet returning to earth and hitting someone or a residential area?

    Is noise an issue?

A 20 guage usually blows them out of the tree.

.22, it's doesn't do the damage of the shotgun and kills the squirrel cleanly, unlike the bb gun.
A .22 because it kills them cleanly especially if you are hunting for meat not to kill.
    Duhhh? bb gun?....

Shotgun has always been my choice for squirrel. Higher success rate!

    Pellet gun hunting (Squirrels) ?

I have a pellet gun that shoots 500 fps, and im going squirrel hunting this year. I have shot them before but not everytime they have died. What is the best spot to hit them for them to die? Usually When i hit them in the head the run like nothing happened.Pellet gun hunting (Squirrels) ?
If you have a .177 caliber pellet rifle, shooting light weight pellets at 500fps. Your rifle is not powerful enough to hunt small game(IMO)

    Muzzle energy

    500fps - 6.5gr pellets = 3.61fpe

It takes a minimum of 3.0fpe ';at impact'; with a perfect head shot to kill a squirrel. So, unless you're within a few feet of the squirrel, your pellet will not have enough energy at impact to make a clean, humane kill.

When hunting small game with a pellet gun, use head shots only!Pellet gun hunting (Squirrels) ?
The head is the best spot to kill them cleanly. Aim for the neck and more specifically the spinal cord which is very hard so just aim in that general area. Good luck hunting!
I recommend buying on of those NEW Stoeger, 1500 fps air rifles.
it wont kill it but it will hurt it really badly
the hed neck or like right on the front of there chest is the kill zone

so , then quit using it and get a .22 ...you cant hunt with an air rifle in pa...maybe thats why...

Is it legal to hunt squirrels in minnesota without a license.?

Im 16 years old and i was wondering if i would need a license to hunt squirrels with a .177 caliber pellet gun.Is it legal to hunt squirrels in minnesota without a license.?
Don't know about about MN, but in DE you have to have a hunting license, to legally kill game once you turn 16... If you are younger than 16 you don't need to have one, but must be with a hunting licensed, adult... In either case, you must have completed a hunter safety course %26amp; you must only hunt in seasons %26amp; bag limits... There are also limits on how small of a caliber or shot you can use on different game... granted I'm not sure of what that is on squirrel... Yours may be allowed, check with your states dept. fish %26amp; game.Is it legal to hunt squirrels in minnesota without a license.?
blake, squirrels are considered a pest, and are legal to hunt.

To answer the question, here in BC all you need is a valid hunting license and permission of the landowner (if you're hunting on private property that is) but theres no bag limit or season, which means you can hunt 'em anytime and hunt as many as you want.

I would think the rule in Minny should be somewhat the same, maybe a bit different, but the same idea.
in penna. you need a license and you can only shoot 6 a day...but you cant use an airrifle in pa. to hunt...better check...
I would call the DNR before I went out. In Michigan I am pretty sure that you would need one.

I guess it would be legal if your local laws say you can hunt with a semi auto and you had a small game license.

Personally I wouldn't because if someone saw you walking in the woods with a ';ak47'; they would probably flip and call the cops, get a rugger 10/22 if you want to hunt with a semi
It all depends on your state and local laws. There is some states that has issues with high cap mags while others don't. I honestly don't see it being an issue with it being a rimfire but I would double check. Also look into the GSG AK-47. Their rifles are way more realistic and work great.

    Have fun and be safe.
If your State allows semi auto .22 rifles with normal or large capacity mags then yes.
That thing is a piece of crap- go traditional and get a 10/22 or 597.

I absolutely love my Ruger model 77/22 and model 77/22M. What I like about these rifles is that they have large rifle styling and were build with adults in mind. Many 22 rimfires seem to be targeted to smaller famed people, like kids and women. The Ruger has a rubber butpad (so it does not slip when you shoulder it), integral scope mounts and rings, and a detachable rotary magazine (not compaitable with the Ruger 10/22). I liked these rifles so much that I bought both the standard .22 LR version and the .22 Magnum.

Mossberg model 341 because it is very light with a 24 inch 1:16 target barrel and it is extremely accurate and the bolt action is so well made it feels like it's from a Mauser design good luck busting those nutters

Pennsylvania Game Commission - State Wildlife

GAME COMMISSION OFFICERS PROVIDE SMALL GAME SEASON REPORTS

HUNTERS REMINDED ABOUT 鈥楽HARING THE HARVEST鈥?br>

HARRISBURG 鈥?Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officers (WCOs) report this week that field conditions are promising for this Saturday鈥檚 start of the statewide squirrel and grouse seasons, which run from Oct. 14 to Nov. 25.

An overwhelming majority of WCOs rated squirrel hunting prospects as good to excellent. Grays are plentiful statewide; fox squirrels are also in good supply in many western counties and increasing in southcentral counties. There also seems to be increased opportunity this fall to take black-phased gray squirrels in some northern tier counties.

Squirrels are one of the state鈥檚 most under-utilized game resources. In 1985, more than a half million Pennsylvanians hunted squirrels. Today, squirrel hunters number about a quarter million. Some have speculated that this decrease in hunting pressure has influenced the eastern expansion of fox squirrels, which are occupying more and more territory east of their established western Pennsylvania range, especially in southcentral counties.

The prospect of hunting fox squirrels, which are North America鈥檚 largest tree squirrel, appeals to hunters in eastern counties. They represent something new, different and fondly reminiscent of the gray squirrels most young hunters cut their teeth on. But the fox squirrel鈥檚 penchant to inhabit open forests with little understory makes it a challenging quarry. In addition, finding a huntable population of fox squirrels on their expanding frontier may also be tough. You may be better off hunting fox squirrels in established range.

it depends on what state u live in but its probably legal anywayIs hunting with a (ak47) replica in 22 caliber legal to hunt squirrels with pic. included?

I do not own either one but do own other CZ and Ruger rifles and can attest both make a fine product.... In todays economic climate I suggest the Ruger because its made in USA but both are excellent....What are some good bolt action .22's you recommend for hunting squirrels?

    In McKean County, WCO Rose Luciane reported, ';There seems to be a lot of black-phased grays this year.'; Fellow McKean County WCO Tom Sabolcik also added, ';Squirrel numbers seem to be at an all-time high with sightings of black squirrels on the increase.';

The Crosman Storm XT is powerful enough to hunt squirrels with, but its a bit light for possums. You're better off hunting possums, raccoons, and other large small game animals with a .22 or .25 caliber air-rifle that turns out around 800-900 fps (or more). Is the Crosman Storm XT a good air rifle to hunt squirrels and possums with?
i shot both the squirrel it died instantly. now the possum you have to be close and shoot staright to the head. use good strong pellets also. i killed mine in two shots but like i say i was close.
good for squirrel, but id keep my shots close and only to the temple on the possum! benjamin 392 would be a better choice for possum

Is This A Good Rifle To Squirrel Hunt?

    http://www.pyramydair.com/p/beretta-cx4-air-rifle-combo.shtml

Someone says it has 600 fps but is it good?Is This A Good Rifle To Squirrel Hunt?
I see the anti-airgun crowd is out in force on this question... However to be fair they do raise a valid point. You should make sure that hunting with air-rifles is legal in your state/province/shire since game laws do vary. That said, I wish some of the anti-airgun idiots would realize that hunting with air-rifles is legal in a great many English speaking areas of the world and keep their comments about how its illegal everywhere because its illegal where they live to themselves.

To answer your question, to kill a squirrel with a .177 pellet rifle (using an 8 grain pellet), you need a minimum impact velocity of 415 fps. The rifle you linked to should be able to deliver that impact velocity out to around 20 yards. So yes, that gun will kill a squirrel. However its far from ideal since you'd need perfect shot placement and you don't have much margin for error at realistic hunting ranges. You would be better off with a more powerful air-rifle.

As far as small-game, hunting air-rifles go, ideally you would buy a more powerful model for hunting. Most of the spring piston guns designed for hunting can drive the same 8 grain .177 pellet that the gun you asked about uses at 1000+ fps or a 14 grain .22 pellet at 800+ fps. Some of the pre-charged pneumatic rifles can equal or exceed those velocities with .177 and .22 caliber pellets. Additionally if you really want plenty of power there are pre-charged pneumatics out there which drive pellets that are .25, .308, 9mm or larger at 500-700+ fps. In general a .22 pellet rifle with a muzzle velocity of 800+ fps is more than adequate for small game out to 30-40 yards so you should look at one of those instead of the air-rifle you linked to.Is This A Good Rifle To Squirrel Hunt?
Yes, it would be possible, ';IF'; your rifle will shoot pellets such as the Beeman Laser(6.5gr) at 600fps(MV)

    600fps - 6.5gr pellet = 5.2fpe

You could hunt a squirrel at close range. It takes 3.0fpe at impact, with a perfect head shot to kill a squirrel.

IMO, for $290 you could do a heck of a lot better.

For that kind of $$ you could get a great small game pellet rifle.

    And have money left over!

The Benjamin 397 also makes a very nice small game rifle

    A Crosman ';64'; peep sight %26amp; the 397 make a great combo.
If your gun can't make a clean 1 shot kill on a squirrel, a distance of 100 feet or more, it is worthless as a weapon to hunt with.

in Florida, it is NOT leagle to hunt game animals, with a pellet or BB gun
600fps is a bird gun.Won't penetrate fur.1000fps with good optics like 8x and premium pellets is a skull popper.(the cx will work for close work!)
    Get a .22 Caliber.

I have one and I hunt squirrels It does not blow them apart unlike other rifles.
    go with a .22lr or a .410 shotgun.
I dont care what gun you have and dont listen to them people below me. 600 fps is plenty for a squirel.
If you're looking to merely wound them, yes. Get a .22.
bro go with a 22 this gun probably wouldn't get the job done

Can I hunt squirrels and birds with airsoft guns?

No. You want an airgun for that. Can I hunt squirrels and birds with airsoft guns?
Wow u must be bored.. uh.. yeah i guess
No. A plastic bb traveling at the rather poky speed of 350 fps will not, and cannot kill a squirrel, or any other animal for that matter.

    Do not do this.

I have answered probably 100 questions *exactly* like this, and these questions continue to convince me that the gene pool needs a good dose of chlorine...
I really doubt it you need either a pellet gun or air gun.
No. An airsoft gun won't kill anything. Now, I'm a hunter myself, but why would you want to go around popping birds and squirrels with lil' plastic balls? I just assume that if you did kill something, it would just go to waste.
    no
    NOPE.

You would need an 'air rifle' that shoots metal pellets and or bbs to really kill anything regarding small game like that.
Yeah it will hurt but not as much as you think just enough to make him run away. You're probably better off using an Airgun with metal pellets or buying a cheap rifle I guess.
Say some one pelts you with a full auto gas airsoft rifle with around 200 times
No, it is illegal. Also it does not work very well. You will find after trying for 15-20 minutes that your time has been completely wasted. You will not kill the animal, and only possibly injure it. It is not a good idea.
you could probably piss them off.

Why is it my cat does not hunt squirrels?

I let my cat go outside all the time and she likes to hunt insects and mice and chase birds. I dont want my cat to hunt squirrels but I am just wondering why she doesn't care about sqirrels being on her territory. Why is it my cat does not hunt squirrels?
Have you ever seen a squirrels teeth and claws?!?!

No cat in it's right mind will take on an adult squirrel more than once. Cat's may not have the largest brains but they are not stupid. My cats chase squirrels but make no attempt to actually catch them. They have learned the hard way that you don't take on prey with longer teeth than you have. Why is it my cat does not hunt squirrels?
Cats usually don't like squirrels. If they don't bother them, they have no need to hunt them. They usually like smaller animals, but if they are use to eat regular cat food then they won't usually hunt often.
My cat runs at squirrel sometimes but I think their size is intimidating. They might just fight back! My other cat is really odd. She ignores all birds except the Jays. I think she loves the loud squawk they make when she startles them.
because squirrels are too big for her to chase. You wouldn't want her messing with a squirrel anyway, they have a nasty bite!
Not to sure, personally i think that a squirrel is so fast that a cat doesnt even bother.
Maybe she is a pacifist:) or maybe she doesn't want to risk catching one and getting hurt. Smart kitty.
a cat is no match for the strength, speed and cunning of a wily squirrel.
They are good buddies. You should see what happens when you're not there. I know .... I own a carrel.
your cat is a secret member of PETA....
    he doesn't like them.

  • .12 gage or ruger 10/22 for hunting squirrels?

i am going hunting in pennsylvania in November for mainly squirrels and rabbits, i will use a mossberg 500 for the rabbits, but im not sure what to use for squirrels, i can either use a ruger 10/22, scope zeroed in perfectly, i can get 5 shots through the same hole, or a .12 gage using low brass #6 shot... any suggestions?.12 gage or ruger 10/22 for hunting squirrels?
A head shot with a .22 does away with the problem of bits of shot ending up in the meat. Not a pleasant thing to bite down on. If you are as good as you say, go with the .22 for the squirrels. I'd use it on the bunnies for the same reason. When you're good enough to do it, go for it..12 gage or ruger 10/22 for hunting squirrels?
Ok, you CAN technically use a rifle, or even a low caliber pistol to shoot the rabbits, but a shotgun is a little too much for a squirrel I'd say. I'd use the rifle for the squirrels, and the shotgun for the rabbits. If you're not hunting rabbits with dogs, then I don't see much of a problem with hunting rabbits with the rifle as well, just be aware, if you're using dogs, and trying to aim with a scope, you have a chance of losing your peripheral vision and shooting a dog. That's what would make the biggest difference to me, is if you're taking dogs to chase the rabbits, otherwise, do what you think you're capable of, although rabbit hunting with a rifle sounds unsafe to me.
consider this, if your hunting squirrels and a rabbit jumps up, or vice versa, you will use what is in your hand, correct? so if you can use one gun for both, why carry two guns?

in my opinion, the 22 is more fun to hunt with, but the shotgun will bring home more meat. i prefer the 22 for rabbits, since they will usually run a short distance when flushed from cover, then stop to check their surroundings. the 22 gives me the edge for distance shots.

on the other hand, nothing beats a shotgun for fast moving targets, whether in the tree or on the ground.

i have hunted squirrels for years with a shotgun loaded with 12 gage,

2 3/4 in #6 shot and have never had a problem with damaged meat, unless i shot full choke too close. (i use a side by side full and modified)

my opinion? take the shotgun, leave the 22 at home. hunt smart and bring home the game.

It depends on what you're comfortable shooting. I know that people have recommended the 10/22. That's great if you can hit the target. Some have a hard time doing that and it is imperative to watch where you are shooting because the bullets travel over a mile.

It's easier to hit a rabbit or squirrel with a shotgun, although I would not use #6s. That is more for ducks and pheasant. I would use #7.5, 8 or 9s. Using an improved cylinder choke tube will give you a wider pattern so if you hit an animal, it won't tear up the meat as much as a full or modified choke.
The shot gun is your best bet. The 22 will tear up more then a shot gun unless you can make head shots. As long as you are shooting at a distance and not point blank, the shot gun will only hit with a few pellets. If you are just sitting and watching, then the 22 is ok, but a running shot will need a shot gun.
When I hunt alone I stick with an accurate 22 rifle and try to keep it at head shots, but when hunting with a friend, w go with 1 rifle and 1 shotgun. The runners are collected with the shotgun, while those sitting and scolding are head shot. I also think low brass #6 shot is the best. any smaller and you will have alot more pellets to find..

    Happy hunting
The Ruger 10/22 is an excellent choice for Squirrel Hunting. Like the answer before me stated, you will lose a lot of meat with a Shot-Gun.
    Use a .22.
Use the .22 for both or you will loose a lot of meat.
which ever your most comfortable with ,they are both good!
A .12 gage has too many pellet . question is how many hole do you want in a squirrel ?

How to get my dog to squirrel hunt?

I have a papillon breed dog he's about two years old I read they are good hunters and I want to take him squirrel hunting this october 2009How to get my dog to squirrel hunt?
It's going to be almost impossible in the short length of time . But start now and by the end of hunting season he may be started pretty good. This is the quickest way to get him started. You need to kill a squirrel. Take the squirrel and let the dog muzzle it and nip on it.Try and hold the squirrel and pull on it and the dog will try to take it away from you. Engage in a slight tug of war with the dog.Do everything you can to get the dog excited as possible over the squirrel. Then have someone hold the dog or keep him in the yard as you take a string and tie it to the squirrel. Then drag the squirrel on the ground for a short distance. Then drag him up a bush or small tree that you can place the squirrel where the dog can see the squirrel when he trails it to the tree you have the squirrel up.Don't let the dog see where you placed the squirrel. Then let the dog loose and he will try to find the squirrel. He should be able to go straight to the tree and smell up it.When he sees the squirrel encourage him to get it. He may even bark at the squirrel at this point. Again, try to get him as excited as possible at this point. Now you can get the squirrel down. Let the dog play with it as you pull it around. Now it is time for the most important thing. You need to reward the dog not with just praise but a treat. You can either give the dog his favorite doggy treat or do as the old timers did when training their squirrel dogs. Cut the liver and heart out of the squirrel and take the gall off the liver (gall is bitter) and feed it to the dog. If you follow these steps you will have gotten the dog off to a good start. But if the dog showed little interest in the squirrel or trailing it, he will not make a good squirrel dog.Good luck! How to get my dog to squirrel hunt?
Get some squirrel stuffed animals and throw them around the yard or tie them to a string and run.
Simple.... just don't feed him. See how fast he reverts back to being a carnivorous predator.

yes, in california you can hunt resident small game and non game animals with an airgun! the only restriction is you must use a .20cal or bigger to hunt wild turkeys! look it up in california department of fish and game ,mammal hunting regulations sub. div.2 game and furbearers sec.311f .Is it illegal to hunt squirrel in California with an airgun(air rifle)? I really need to know. Thank you!?
your fish and game pages do not address air gun use at all. I would call and ask a conservation officer.

This site gave lots of additional info you may need on tree squirrels but if you are talking ground squirrels it is a whole new ballgame. http://www.jesseshunting.com/site/cal-tr鈥?/a>

why would you hunt a squirrel!?!

they are the cutest animals in the world =(

I am a new hunter and want to know how to prepare a squirrel to eat after I hunt one.?

I am a new hunter and dont know how to prepare a freshly hunted squirrel to eat. I use a .177 rifleI am a new hunter and want to know how to prepare a squirrel to eat after I hunt one.?
I take squirrels and skin them out, take off their heads, tails, and feet then rub them with some olive oil and sprinkle on a seasoning mix of lemon pepper, garlic powder, black pepper and brown sugar. Place on a hot grill and rotate them after 7- 9 minutes depending on the size and how hot the coals are. To check if there done I take a sharp knife and split the 'thigh' and look for blood. Kind of looking for the same texture as a chicken thigh.I am a new hunter and want to know how to prepare a squirrel to eat after I hunt one.?
Most of the above. To skin: Pinch the hair on the back and make a cut from side to side in fur and skin only. Insert first two fingers of both hands and pull in opposite directions. Push legs through until the joint just above the foot is reached. Break bone at joint, cut and remove feet. Remove head and hide. Carefully, don't cut the inside stomach pouches, slice skin of belly up through breast bone opening the cavity. Grab inside neck (top) and pull out everything inside. Rinse in water.

The sooner you do this the easier it is. The skin gets more difficult the longer you wait.

Cut up by removing each leg and then cut the back at the bottom of the ribs. Toss the ribs, they aren't worth messing with. Soak in salt water in the refrigerator over night then cook.

    Hope this helps.
Dave S has it right. But with that much power, only use head shots, or gut juice will spoil the taste. A good 3X9 scope turned up as far as practical for the shot will help. Also, boil the carcase for at least 10 minutes to kill all pathogens, which may include Bubonic plague. Then flour (unbleached) and fry, or whatever. And keep some tetracycline in the first aid kit in case you nick yourself during the cleaning and get infected. Also, shake off all the fleas a long ways from your camp. Oh, when you referred to 17 cal, if that is an air rifle, it's definitely head shots, as body hits with an air rifle might mean a long bloodless trail to follow hoping for followup shots! Silly me, I initially thought you meant one of the new 17 Cal firearms!
I, don't know for sure, but after hunting a squirrel, i would suggest that you KILL said squirrel, before trying to eat it.

That being said, a .177, is a poor choice for consistantly clean kills on squirles, as the .177 will more times than not, only wound the animal.
Skin the squirrel. Remove the guts, feet, head and tail. Cut it up roll in flour with a little salt and black pepper. Fry it like chicken, serve with biscuits and gravy. Breakfast of champions.
Wow I am not sure if that is enough gun for squirrel huntng. If you do get one skin it and fry it up they taste great.

Can one hunt squirrels in the state of washington?

I want to do a bit of amateur taxidermy to try my hand at it. I'd like to start with squirrels, but I don't know if a license is required to hunt them, what the hunting season is, or whether it is even legal at all! I have the large gray squirrels in mind that infest urban areas. Can anyone provide me with some information? Help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Can one hunt squirrels in the state of washington?
Here's some info from WDFW website.

Because legal status, trapping restrictions, and other information about squirrels change, contact your WDFW Regional Office for updates.

The Western gray squirrel is classified as a threatened species and cannot be hunted, trapped, or killed (WAC 232-12-007). The red squirrel, Douglas squirrel, and Northern flying squirrel are protected species and can be trapped or killed only in emergency situations when they are damaging crops or domestic animals (RCW 77.36.030). A special permit is required in such situations.

The Eastern gray squirrel and Eastern fox squirrel are unclassified and may be trapped or killed year-round and no permit is necessary. In such cases, no special trapping permit is necessary for the use of live traps. However, a special trapping permit is required for the use of all traps other than live traps (RCW 77.15.192, 77.15.194; WAC 232-12-142).

So basically you can kill the Eastern Grey and Eastern Fox squirrels, and no other breeds. Those are fairly common in cities, so finding them shouldn't be a problem. The thing with squirrels is they are small enough that a pellet rifle will kill them, so you don't have to worry about shooting a .22 in the city. Hollow point pellets are best. Can one hunt squirrels in the state of washington?
yes you can. but I think you do have to have a license to hunt them. season starts in September to January.
Check the state website for hunting regulations. Dept of Fish and Game. The grey squirrel is not native. Long furry tailed rats.
Pick up a rules and regulations booklet from any sporting goods store.

Generally, it IS NOT a good idea in a populated area.
