Can u use a crossman 66 at ten pumps to hunt small game (squirrels, rabbit, etc.)????

The 66 is not powerful enough to consistently kill squirrels, or even a big rat. You really need more juice. I would get a more powerful air rifle, either a break barrel or a PCP. Something in larger than .177 for actual hunting in the woods conditions. Can u use a crossman 66 at ten pumps to hunt small game (squirrels, rabbit, etc.)????
I found that the pellets make all the difference. I haven't had to use them in years, but the ';pointed'; pellets that are available from Crossman and other makers do a fine job on squirrels, rabbits, rats, chipmunks, etc if you hit the animal well (head shot).

The flat or domed pellets just don't penetrate well, but the pointed ones stop big Pennsylvania squirrels dead in their tracks! Can u use a crossman 66 at ten pumps to hunt small game (squirrels, rabbit, etc.)????
The Crosman 66 develops a muzzle energy of 7.3ft lbs

645fps with 7.9gr pellets = 7.3fpe

With a head shot it takes 5.0fpe at impact to make a clean, humane kill on a rabbit, and 3.0fpe for squirrel.

Airgun - Ballistics Calculator

If you get 645fps using 7.9gr Crosman Premier Domed Light pellets, your 66 will retain 5.1fpe at 19 yards, and 3.4fpe at 40 yards.

Even though the 66 retains enough energy at those ranges, you still have to be able to make the shot, and your target is only 1in - 1.5in

IMO, you should practice until you can hit a target the size of a .50c piece with every shot then you can hunt at that range so long as your rifle has the required impact energy.

Domed pellets - While you should always use the pellets that are most accurate in your rifle. ';Generally'; speaking, domed pellets are the most effective for hunting purposes.

I've said it before and I will ignore the thumbs down.

Air weapons lack the power required for a clean, humane kill. You need incredible accuracy or a fluke to avoid injured game. For rabbits get yourself a .22LR. For squirrels you will be shooting well above the horizon and for safety reasons I suggest a .410 shotgun is a better choice.

You could but you would still need to be at a very close range! More likely you would not kill the animal but only wound the animal. If you are in an area that allows hunting try using a 22 cal. A great small arm and will make you a much better shot as well. .......... Good hunting!
