Can I hunt crows and squirrels with my air rifle?

I bought this air rifle such a long time ago and I probably need to clean it. Any way I want to start hunting with it and I was wondering if it was strong enough to even kill them.

mines the very top.

If your gun is a Daisy 880 (which is the gun in the picture you linked to), its got right about 7.4-7.6 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That's more than enough to hunt and kill squirrels (which take 3 ft-lbs of impact energy to kill) and crows (3-5 ft-lbs impact energy to kill) provided you limit yourself to head-shots at close range (20-25 yards, or less).

If your gun is Daisy 105 (which is the specs say is the gun in the top slot of the website), then its got right about .85 ft-lbs of muzzle energy which isn't enough to kill anything. It could wound a squirrel or a crow (maybe, at 5 feet...), but not kill them outright.

Edit:

There's something screwy about that website you linked to. They're using a picture of an Daisy 880 on the section of their site that is describing a Daisy 105. So much for professional quality control on e-commerce sites. Can I hunt crows and squirrels with my air rifle?
Squirrels, no. There fur is too much for a bb going that slow to pass through. Even if it made it to the skin, it won't go through or very deep whatsoever. Mine shoots around 350 and can't pass through the skin at 5 yards.

Crows, yeah, pretty easily. Their feathers aren't very thick and you Will have to hit them in the head. I shoot them all the time, but between how quick the BB drops and how inaccurate they are, my farthest has only been 25 yards. So, i'm pretty sure it's gonna be a fatal shot at about 10 - 20 yards.
having had that ';gun'; i can tell you its way to weak.

if you really want to hunt squirrels and crows get a .22 or 20 gauge. both you can get for around or a little over $100

and can ethically take crow and squirrel. that ';gun'; is more of a can popper, and was never meant for hunting.
Never shot one of those, but I did have a similar little daisy bb gun, and it's taken a few crows. Thing is, I have to pump it 50 times, and I'm not exaggerating that number.
No. if you really need to kill them than i'd save up for a crosman phantom 500 which shoots at 495 fps. usind crosman wadcutters you could easiely kill a squirell and maybe a crow.

dont even try to use yours. that thing shoots less than my airsoft pistol.
sorry no
that looks like a daisy 880. i own one and have taken rabbits and squirrels out to 15yrds or so ! just aim at the temple and it should work well !
yes

Why is it legal to hunt and kill squirrels, rabbits, racoons, but illegal to hunt and kill cats..?

Because only rednecks will keep squirrels and racoons as pets. Why is it legal to hunt and kill squirrels, rabbits, racoons, but illegal to hunt and kill cats..?
i would love to shoot some stray cats who keep coming and keep trying to impregnate my cat !! so i just throw stuff at it ?Why is it legal to hunt and kill squirrels, rabbits, racoons, but illegal to hunt and kill cats..?
theyre all roadkill at the end
Don't worry, I'll shoot enough of them for you too! I can't stand them things and they're in my woods at night, just waiting to walk on my truck with their pathetic paws. I think I'm weeding them down now. That, or the coyotes, he he!
What did you do with your hair?!?

To answer yyour question, it is because a lot of people keep cats as pets.
Cuz squirrells, rabbits, and coons make for some good eatin! Cats are only for Chinese food!
i breed cats just to have snake food all the time

Are you aloud to hunt rabbits, squirrels, birds, ect. in a residential area.?

i live in a neighborhood and my friends are hunting rabbits, squirrels, birds, ect in peoples backyards with bee-bee guns.(air gun)

1st off- is it legal?

2nd- do bee-bee guns acutely penetrate skin?

3rd- do you have to have a license to kill any animal?

4th-are you even aloud to kill animals on non-hunting grounds?

5th-what are your thoughts on it?

btw-my friends are stupid like that.

Thanks,

Kristin

Are you aloud to hunt rabbits, squirrels, birds, ect. in a residential area.?
1) probably not, there are licenses and such. Hunting and trapping in residential areas is not good.

2) BB guns CAN penetrate skin, otherwise your friends wouldn't use them. Did you mean human skin? Yes.

3) It depends on the DNR, but I think you need one for certain animals- but not others.

4) allowed? Perhaps- private land, for example, and it depends on the county/city/town laws.

5) kill 'em, but you better have a reason other than because you ';could'; such as for food or to keep varmints down. Are you aloud to hunt rabbits, squirrels, birds, ect. in a residential area.?
In most cities it is illegal to discharge a firearm - I think a bb gun counts as a firearm. Yes, bb guns can penetrate the skin. No, you do not have to have a license to kill most animals, but you do need a hunting license in most areas. Yes, you can kill animals on non-hunting grounds. My brothers used to kill small animals - I thought it was gross then, I guess I still think it is gross.
1. Depends on your local laws. In Raleigh, NC there was a story about a guy shooting squirrels in his back yard with rat shot. It was legal.

2. Maybe. Depends on how powerful the gun is and how close the target was. They definitely can.

3. Depends on state and local laws. For vermin generally no.

4. Yes, especially if you own the property.

5. I agree your friends are stupid.
It is not legal to shoot in those areas.

You would need a license if it was for the rabbits and squirrels.

Song birds are protected and illegal to shoot any time any where.

Doing any these things are likely to get them arrested and fined and also get them some very unhappy parents!!!!
The law probably restricts the use of BB guns / Firearms etc.

in the city limits.

There may be hunting seasons for Squirrels %26amp; Birds

in some areas.
allowed

If I hunted down Squirrels for fun, how would you judge me?

yes considering it is my summer camp nicknameIf I hunted down Squirrels for fun, how would you judge me?
id be okay with that

if i had to hunt somethang it would be squirrels. If I hunted down Squirrels for fun, how would you judge me?
i wouldnt i 'hunt' magpies for fun
MURDAH!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would say it's kind of unnecessary
nuts what doe you use as your weapon of choice? i seem to use my truck the most for the animal rights acttivests ...not on purpose
I would think that you are an evil horrible person who deserves to be hunted down by vengeful squirrels.
Providing you have taken a hunter training course, a firearms safety course and have passed. Along with understanding how nature and humans co-exist. As well as following your state /provincial Wildlife Regulations and you are hunting in an open season, along with all the necessary Permits needed to hunt squirrels safely as well as not going over your bag limit , then I would approve. If you do not follows these guidelines, then I would label you a poacher.

Other wise safe and prosperous hunting - good luck.
I would think it were cruel of you : (

Who was it that said ';Perry Saturn can hunt rabbits and squirrels at the same time?';

Back in 2000 (I think) on Raw or Smackdown, somebody was feuding with The Radicalz and they made fun of Saturn being cross-eyed. I forget who said that though. I'm guessing it was either Jericho or The Rock.

If you can find a video of it, that would be great.Who was it that said ';Perry Saturn can hunt rabbits and squirrels at the same time?';
it was the rock. he said now on 2 u perry saturn the rock knows u have 1 eye that goes this way and another that goes that way and the rock is just hopin for secound that the eye thats goin that way is looking at the rocks hand going that way so the rock will slap that crooked eye straightWho was it that said ';Perry Saturn can hunt rabbits and squirrels at the same time?';
The Rock, twice (1 on RAW, 1 on SD), mocked Saturn with that one eye going that way and the other eye going the other way but I couldn't find a video where The Rock or Jericho said that line

Any suggestions? THKs?
maybe leave some bird seed or squirrel food out and they will eat that and leave your eggs alone.
    Keep the eggs inside
    Spray them with Ni-Cd :-D
Get some of nail polish that has the nasty taste (for nailbiters) and put some of that on the outside of the eggs. As long as the kids dont lick the outside of the plastic eggs, it should be okay. The smell of nail polish is a deterrant too.

Do you know how to fine-tune a dog to hunt squirrels?

I have a female catahoula leopard dog. She is almost 7 years old. She is awesome at tracking wounded deer (my boyfriend uses her for this in case one runs, he's a good shot, so that doesn't really happen a lot) and running rabbits (does it on her own) with the local hounds. I use her for obedience and agility. She is an all around great dog.

She is a natural at treeing anything, especially squirrels. She watches them in the trees, looks for them in the trees anytime she in the in the woods, or just even on a walking trail. If she sees them on the ground, she'll chase them straight up a tree and then attempt to climb the tree. Then she'll stand under the tree and stare at them until I call her off. The only thing is that she will not bark or make a sound. I understand a good treeing dog is that they will bark and bay at what is up the tree so the hunter can find the location.

This year I have decided to join my boyfriend in hunting. But what I'd really like to do is squirrel hunting with my dog. It would give us another activity to do together as a team. And she is so interested in squirrels that I know she'd love this as well. The only thing is she wont bark at them. Is there a way I can teach her bark/bay when she trees a squirrel? She doesn't run off from me in the woods either, only to tree a squirrel near us. So does barking even matter then?

Any suggestions from EXPERIENCED squirrel hunters who use dogs? I'm just looking to go out with my dog and have some fun. She is such a natural at treeing squirrels too.....I just need some tips to fine-tune this instinct.

(and yes, we eat all of the game meet hunt, and what we don't eat, I turn it into jerky or make dog food from it.)Do you know how to fine-tune a dog to hunt squirrels?
You have a great dog. The barking on a lot of dogs when they tree usually will come after you kill several squirrels with them and they realize the squirrel is what you are after. But due to her age you may jump start the process by really encouraging her when she trees. It is also important to try and kill every squirrel she trees. The reason she doesn't bark is because you have not killed the squirrels she has treed and doesn't know you want her to even tree them. But take the first squirrel you kill that she has treed, and let her muzzle it for a while then engage in a little tug of war with it for a minute or two. She will try and pull it away from you. If she refuses to let it go, lift up her ear and blow into it- she will drop the squirrel, then put it just out of her reach in a bush where she can see it. Encourage her to get the squirrel. Get her excited. She should start barking after a few trips and training efforts with the bushes and the squirrels. It is the breeds nature to bark at the tree. Curs make excellent tree dogs. I have had them that would tree squirrels in the daytime and coons at night. And like yours, since I do a lot of bow hunting the dog was great at finding deer after the shot when the blood trial could not be unraveled. Before I became a fanatic about bow hunting, squirrel hunting with a dog was my greatest sport. There is nothing like it.You have a very lucky boyfriend.(you have a dog that will track his deer after the shot) How lucky can he get? Good luck with your dog.Do you know how to fine-tune a dog to hunt squirrels?
Try to get her more involved with the whole process. After you kill a squirrel and are field dressing it, give her some of the good stuff, (heart, liver, and lungs). She will love the treat, but make sure you make her speak(bark)for it. If she's smart she'll get more exited when she trees the squirrel, knowing she is going to share it with you.
If the dog does not bark on ';tree';. Leave it alone they are for hunting POSTED Land........
the problem with her not barking is that she is a catahoula and thats what i use for hog and cow dogs and most of the time you dont use a dog to hunt squirell with you just look for them up in the trees but if you had a blue tick or beagle they would bark up the tree but most of the time a cur and catahoula are qiuet on trail

    Squirrel hunting......

i want to take my little sister small game hunting she leant how to shoot my .22 does any 1 hunt squirrel and do u think it would b a good idea to take her Squirrel hunting......
How old is she ? Best if you both do lots of practice shooting tin cans before you try squirrels because you want to be good enough to kill the squirrels right off and not just wound them . Once you are both good shots then go for it.

Can I hunt squirrels on my property in CT without a license? Property is ~2 acres.?

You can legally get away with it if the squirrel appeared rabid and was charging. In Georgia it's like that anway. Can I hunt squirrels on my property in CT without a license? Property is ~2 acres.?
NO!!! you need 10 acres to hunt with a rife in CT, and it must be privet. and you need a license to hunt.... (for a bow there isn't a property limitation, you just need permission to retrieve your kill)

now... i never said you can't shoot them! ; )

just to be considered hunting (by law) it has to be legal

just get a .177 pellet gun that shoots 1000fps... and your good to goCan I hunt squirrels on my property in CT without a license? Property is ~2 acres.?
    YOUR PROPERTY, YOUR RULES!
Yeah sure, as long as the nieghboors don't mind a .22 or airgun. Make sure of your target and beyond.

I have a Beeman 22. air rifle, i want to hunt squirrels, what kind of pellets should i use?

The first question is, how good a shot are you?

And, what velocity does your gun shoot?

For small game, you want a pellet that will do damage, but expend it's energy inside the prey.

Pointed pellets or hollowpoints are the way to go, as they're intended for hunting.

Most manufacturers offer pointed pellets, but the hollowpoints are a lot harder to find.

Umarex carries some really funky pellets. I included a link to their pellets below.

    Pellets are fairly cheap too.

Buy a box of whatever you like, see how they shoot through your gun, and go with what works best for you.I have a Beeman 22. air rifle, i want to hunt squirrels, what kind of pellets should i use?
The ones your gun shoots most accurately. Pretty much any hunting weight airgun will be able to deliver the necessary 3 ft-lbs of impact energy out to at least 30 yards.(1) However the kill zone for a head shot on a squirrel is around 1-inch. (So is the heart-lung cavity, but a head shot is preferred since its much more likely to kill cleanly.) Therefore the limiting factor is going to be accuracy not power at hunting ranges. In order make the most use of the power your gun has and increase the odds of a clean kill, you should use the pellet your gun shoots most accurately.

In order to find the pellet your gun shoots most accurately, you need to test as many different pellets as possible. The most economical method of doing this is to buy pellet sampler packs from online retailers for your testsI have a Beeman 22. air rifle, i want to hunt squirrels, what kind of pellets should i use?
Heavy weight types. Crossman are good, I have found them very accurate. Sight your gun in very carefuly from a rest at the distance you expect to use it. You must be able to hit a squirrel's head at that distance. Try different pellets in your gun, some will shoot better than others. Airguns are funny like that.
the heavier the better. Whatever you do, bont use PBA Raptors, they are to light and will not break bone. Kodiak Pellets are good, 10.6 grains, Crow Magnum or just plain 7.9 grain would do just fine. Just don't go below that.
    None

You should get a rifle more suited to the job. Either a .22LR or a .410 shotgun.

Airguns are just not up to the job of humanly killing vermin

OK, Maybe mice if you stay inside the barn.

You know, the desire to kill small, helpless animals can be an indication of some serious psychological problems. Maybe you should see a doctor about that.

Or rather could a crow kill a squirrel or vice versa?Do Crows hunt Squirrels?
Crows are scavengers. They do not hunt. They just eat dead stuff that they find, like road kill. That is why they are protected by law.Do Crows hunt Squirrels?

What would be the best dog to hunt raccoons, squirrels, and hogs?

Catahula cur will do all of them and do it well..But if it were not for the hogs, I would go with a mountain cur. Easiest trained treeing dog on the market and would be great on coons and squirrels. The cur dog is bigger, tougher and more hard headed then the cur, but that makes him ideal for the hogs. My advice is get two dogs-one for the treeing and one for the hog hunting. We hog hunted with the catahula cur in the old days. A good one would find the hogs, bay them up and keep them herded up until you got there. Then the dogs master could just point to the hog he wanted caught. The dog grabbed the smaller hogs behind the head and held them. There was one boar one day that went close or over 300 lbs. His master pointed him out to the dog. No way, I was thinking, this can't be done. But the dog grabbed the hog by his jowls and clamped down. The hog took off dragging the dog for almost a hundred yards, but the dog held on and stopped the hog. The guy owned the hogs and wanted to get the boar and castrate him to make a meat hog out of him later on. We had horses and ropes, and we got the job done. This was how country people survived years ago. That's why I say the Catahula Cur is the best hog dog on this earth. You can't hunt hogs with one and come away saying any thing different. What would be the best dog to hunt raccoons, squirrels, and hogs?
It depends on what you want to use the dogs for. Do you want tracking dogs? Or do you just need a dog to tree the raccoon? Do you need a dog to sniff out a hog, or to bay it? Do you want a dog that will hold the hog down?

For a catch dog, the Dogo Argentino or American Bulldog is probably best. They are strong, fast, and were bred for hog hunting. However, keep in mind that you're dealing with a 200 pound animal armed with sharp tusks. I suggest using at least three dogs for hogs. Also use proper safety gear to protect the dogs. What would be the best dog to hunt raccoons, squirrels, and hogs?
Treeing walker coonhound will take care of all of the above. They will bay hogs.. but they dont make good catch dogs.
