What is a good breed of dog that will hunt rabbits AND squirrels?

Need a dog that hunt both squirrels and rabbits. What is a good breed of dog that will hunt rabbits AND squirrels?
There are several from the Terrier Group. You want a dog with a high prey drive. You will also need to encourage their interest in catching prey. An older experienced dog is usually the best way to teach them.

Cairn Terrier

Scottish Terrier

Parson Russel Terrier

Jack Russell Terrier

Wire Fox Terrier

Lakeland Terrier

Welsh Terrier

Smooth Fox Terrier

Sealyham TerrierWhat is a good breed of dog that will hunt rabbits AND squirrels?
A Jack Russell is a serious hunter. If you take the time to train it for rabbit and squirrel only and reward it for the hunt you would have the ultimate companion for a hunter. We raise them and have hunted with some of them.
Any of the hounds can do the job, like the beagle.
i worked at a kennels for 3 yrs and the best would be either a cairne terrier or a jack russle as they are small and less noticed by the animal
My husky hunts everything!
A german boxer is a PERFECT animal for you...very fast and will not get tired easily...they used to use them to hunt and kill bears in the past so imagine what a german boxer will do to a rabbit or squirrel lol
Any of the sighthounds will chase down and catch rabbits, squirrels, or anything else that is small and runs from them.
Terrier breeds definitely. They were bred for killing vermin (smaller pest like rabbits and squirrels) and have a high prey drive :)
any dog will hunt, you just have to train it. My husbands cocker spaniel would hunt whatever he sent it after. She was good at it too.
Beagle would be good, so would most of the terrier breeds.
Terrier
Get a beagle, but make sure that you plain to use it for hunting. If beagles don't get enough exercises, they will just be an annoyance.
Labs are good hunting dogs.
Any type of lab but you have to train them and retreviers! or a pointer and springerspanual
Rat terriers are small and fast. They were bred to hunt rats and other rodents but I have found that mine can catch rabbits and squirrels as well. They are also loving and don't eat as much as a larger dog but are as good or better hunters than large dogs.
BEAGLE!

Hunting eating squirrels ...?

if i kill squirrels, rabbits, birds is it safe to eat them i plain on doing this during the summer i will cook them on a fire outside.Hunting eating squirrels ...?
Sorry, what you're talking about doing is illegal. Your state has a season (not during the Summer) for different animals, and hunting with an air rifle is NOT legal in Mass.

Link below for laws to your state and game bag limits.

http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw/regulatio鈥?/a>Hunting eating squirrels ...?
First of all where ever you choose to hunt and by what ever means make sure you have permision , other wise this is classed as pouching.

Should you be hunting with an air rifle and without permision it is then classed as armed trespass.

As for what you wish to hunt these spices are fine and are some good eating, just make sure you clean them well as well as cook them therow, otherwise a stomachake may be on the cards.

As for a game licence which is mentiond above, the game licencing system was abolished in 2006/2007

One thing i would like to point out to every one , which is a fault with yahoo answere is that in the uk we have our own hunting section so all english Questions pop up and onley english, how ever they also pop up on the international site.

When they pop up on our site i will give an answer that is correct to the way were licenced and governd over hear in the uk.

The question above is a uk question
Just watch out for little pus pockets - those are parasites. Don't eat any animal with them. And if you are going to grill them, be sure to marinade them first - teriyaki marinade is good. And don't overcook it to the jerky stage! Don't eat any animal that looks unhealthy. Birds are best if you cut their little breasts off the bone (like little chicken nuggets!) and fry them. If you soak them in salt water first, then rinse them, it will take some of that ';wild'; taste out and make it better. They all pretty much have a ';liver'; taste to them (squirrel, rabbit, robins and doves anyway), so I stick to venison and fish!
That's not a real easy question to answer accurately. Lots of times in big cities the animals can get all sorts of diseases. If you live in the country, it's not nearly as big of a concern.

But to answer your question generally, yes. Mankind has been eating small animals since we've walked the earth.

Field dressing, etc is something you need to research how before hand. It isn't something you instinctively know how to do. And there are some really important things you need to know like not to puncture any of the stomach, intestines, etc.

And finally, as mentioned, at least in the USA (don't know where you are at) you have to have a license and each animal has it's own season and you can't hunt them when they are out of season.
you are probably going to need a small game license to hunt them.

yes, they can be cooked and eaten...however it is hard to get them well cooked on a fire outside. Practice cooking a chicken or something like that on an open fire before you step up to wildlife
ya i have eatin squirrels, rabbits, and birds. be prepared for the squrrel meat to be a bit chewey, and dont expect a lot of meat on birds their feathers make them look big, and rabbits are by far the best of the three
Just make sure the food is thoroughly cooked with a probe. At my work (i'm a cook) we probe things to 82 Celsius, thats a bit over what it needs to be but you have to play it safe.
make sure the animals you are hunting are in season.also check for spots on the animals liver and in the chest cavity! do not eat them if you find any!
I believe they are alright, I have been eating them all my life.
why would you want to do that? doesnt sound too appealing.
sure just make sure its all legal!
Squirrels are especially nice with Salt ,, but birds especially little pretty song birds are best with a bit of garlic ,,, especially if they are caught mid song they tend to be more relaxed and less tense with the whole murdering process ,, therefore not as tough,,, get the beedy eyed noise makers from behind ,,, Rabbits are less diseased and nicest RAW ,,, a bit of lemon will break down meat enzymes causing it to be more succuelent ,,, If your not fussy Rats are a delicacy is some countries and I find are best kebabed !!! hope this has been some help to you ,,,,xxx
Hi

No wonder the wildlife's in such a state of decline, even the Hedgehogs are on the endangered species list. Without our wildlife the human race is in real trouble.

Looking for a good pelet gun for hunting small critters such as rabbits to squirrels?

looking for a pellet gun i am for sure looking at bolt action love um but if anyone knows any good pellet rifles please help me decide on what to get and it needs to be under $200Looking for a good pelet gun for hunting small critters such as rabbits to squirrels?
SVEN- i LOVE your answer it really shows me you have no clue as to what you talking about. You say ====%26gt;Pellet guns/bb guns are too low caliber to effectively kill a rabbit or squirrel. You should get a .17 caliber riffle. the bullets are tiny and it's a pretty cheap gun,%26lt;==== what the hell kind of pellet gun are you shooting that shots a smaller round then a .17? The littlest pellet gun sold is a .177 and the biggest is a .50, get a .17 rifle, haha yeah or a .177 pellet gun

BUT ANYWAY, if i would be you i would get the .22 gamo whisper, great pest controler

SVEN- dont belive me about pellet guns being able to kill squirrels and rabbits? check this sight out

i think that you might have to be registed to see them thoughLooking for a good pelet gun for hunting small critters such as rabbits to squirrels?
For squirrels and birds you usually need 3 ft-lbs of impact energy. For rabbits, it goes up to 5 ft-lbs of impact energy. If you're serious about only wanting bolt-action pellet guns, then you'll find the selection in the price range you mentioned very limited. There's the:

-Benjamin 392

-Benjamin 397

-Crosman 2260

-Crosman 1769 SE

-Crosman 1377C

-Crosman 2250B

-Sheridan Blue Streak CB9

And that's about it. Of those, at least a couple are co2 guns, which aren't ideal for hunting. (CO2 guns power levels and points of impact shift with the temperature. The colder the air, the less power the gun has.) The only other bolt-action that's even close to the price range you specified is the Benjamin Discovery (at $230 for just the gun. The gun and pump combo will set you back around $400). If you want a more expansive list, there are a number of multi-pump and spring piston guns that aren't bolt-actions which are in your price range such as the:

-RWS 34 Panther

-Gamo Big Cat

-Gamo Hunter Sport

-Gamo CFX

-Gamo Carbine Sport

-Crosman 2100

-Daisy 22SG

-Crosman Phantom

These guns range from budget guns, to high quality airguns. My advice for checking them out is to read the reviews on each gun you're interested in on a site like Pyramid Air. If most reviewers like the gun, its probably not a bad buy. If they don't, or they talk about serious issues with the gun...
Pellet guns/bb guns are too low caliber to effectively kill a rabbit or squirrel. You should get a .17 caliber riffle. the bullets are tiny and it's a pretty cheap gun. It's pretty much made for shooting rabbits/squirrels since is most commonly known as a ';varmint gun'; haha or just settle with the slightly bigger .22 caliber (most common small caliber rifle)
There are some rugged, powerful Chinese and Russian .177 guns around, but they seem hard to find at times. These spring piston powered guns fire a .177 pellet at 1,000fps or better, which will be fine for rats, squirrels, pigeons, and other pesky critters. I've only fired one, and it was a little heavy, but powerful! Check ';Shotgun News'; for availability.

Good luck! I have a Beaman's rifle that fires at a comperable speed, and, when coupled with a ';pointed'; pellet, will drop many small animals. Squirrels fall out of the tree, rats stop in their tracks, and bunny stops eating the garden immediately!
never had any luck with a pellet gun ;) always used a .22 semi auto

people shoot rabbits because they destroy peoples gardens that they are using to feed their families and because they taste good and they breed like mad who is gonna miss five bunnies when bunnies can start breeding around 3-4 months of age and can have a litter every month after that? do you realize how many bunnies can be created by one pair of bunnies per year? lol

  • Can a half breed lab be trained to squirrel hunt and do well?

well im young so of course so i dont have the money to buy a fiest or a good squirrel hunting dog but i do have a half breed lab that attacked a half dead squirrel i shot one day and seemed very anxious for me to finish him when he chased him back up the tree so i got the idea y not train him!!

so if u can help with training tips or if u think he wont work then let me know

ps.what about coon huntingCan a half breed lab be trained to squirrel hunt and do well?
well labs are gun dogs, train it to be at your side when you shoot, then send him to ';retrive'; it, once he has returned tell him to drop it. If you want him to Track them thats harder. Proberably best way is to get a dead squirrel, drag along ground so it leaves a scent trail and hide it up a tree and try to get your lab to ';track'; the scent.

When ever your dog does what you want remeber lots of praise =]Can a half breed lab be trained to squirrel hunt and do well?
A lab is a retriever so its possible. I not into hunting so I'm not real sure if he will retrieve the little critters dead or alive. His prey drive might be a problem.

Oh don't tell him his a half-breed just tell him he is a coon hound
Absolutely. Labs and lab mixes are usually very smart and trainable. They could be taught to hunt down just about anything.
Yes, your dog is telling you that he/she wants to hunt buy attaching the dead squirrel.

Labs are a very diverse breed even when mixed. Good luck and have fun
sure, a half breed is as good as or better then a pure breed.

    just train him well.

but i dont agree with you hunting :P
Why are you murdering poor squirrels???

How many pounds draw weight do you need to hunt squirrels and rabbits with a bow?

well i have a 25 draw ben pearson bow and a 45 pound bow i bought online the only problem is with the number 45 i can hardly aim with because it has no arrow rest.So i am hoping 25 is enough for squirrels and rabbits because iv givin up with the number 45 please helpHow many pounds draw weight do you need to hunt squirrels and rabbits with a bow?
A 25-lb draw is plenty, as long as the arrow hits the right spot on the rabbit/squirrel. Use a blunt made for small game animals, and you shouldn't have any problems -- as long as the arrow hits the right spot on the rabbit/squirrel. (the ';right spot'; is usually the head, but a good and solid body hit can also work)

The Ace Hex-head(tm) is a very good choice; heavy, and it ';grabs'; whatever it hits -- yet it bounces off trees easily. I have also had good results with both the HTM rubber blunt and home-made blunts.

By the way, if your 45-lb draw bow has an arrow shelf, that can be easily used as the arrow rest. So can your hand; just tilt the bow a bit sideways, so the arrow sits in the ';V'; where your hand and the bow meet (if the bow has no shelf; if it does have a shelf, tilt the bow anyway). See the ';avatars'; in the following profiles for what I mean about tilting the bow:

Best techniche to hunt a squirrel?

The only thing I could add is to be very careful if using a .22. You are often shooting up at squirrel....so make sure you are not anywhere near houses or people. .22s can travel a log way and can do damage when they come down. Be responsible.Best techniche to hunt a squirrel?
the previous answers are correct...but if you not the sit and wait kinda guy and so happen to have a partner with you...do this: locate the squirrel, send the person without the gun to the opposite side of the tree, and the squirrel will avoid that individual and eventually come back to your side and....BOOM...take'em down! oh and dont shoot your friend meanwhile. happy hunting.Best techniche to hunt a squirrel?
Walk through Rutherford B Hayes memorial park in Fremont and when he is eating out of your hand grab him and wring his neck slowly so he feels pain. ( for the tree huggers again) . I like to use a Ameristep doghouse blind, and a Primos Squirrel call. That works like a charm. Those squirrel get so mad and come running toward you. Option 2. Get in your tree stand and pretend to be deer hunting, then you'll see a bunch of them.
JD nailed the bejebus outta this one, the best technique is to wait for the squirrel to come to you, not the other way around. Do a little scouting, find an area in the woods with squirrel food trees, walnut, pecan, acorn, fruit trees etc are all good, then sit there quietly and wait for the little tree rats to show up.
Simplest method. Look for an area with lots of squirrel nests. Still hunt slowly thru this area, stopping often for 3 to 5 minutes or more at a time. When you hear or see them, pop em.

Most important thing first though, look for the squirrel nests, they also love corn, so shelterbelts near cornfields are just as good as places with lots of different nut trees.
The sit and wait approach is good if you can sit for at least half an hour at a time. Lately I use the slow walking method with my wife. We walk with one person 50 yards ahead of the other. The squirells with watch the person in front and the person in back can often get a shot at them. Listen for their chatter or other signs that they are in the area such as nuts and twigs falling. As always when hunting with another person you must be careful to know where they are at all times.
while I agree with these other guys sometimes the squirrel just may not be in your area if you havent had any luck after sitting for a while try the walking aproach . i dont mean just trot through the woods either . take a few steps quietly and and then stop keep a sharp eye out wait take a few steps more this makes you harder to spot than the squirrel if you see 1 and he wont move to give you a shot just wait and he will give you a chance . I have had alot of succes with this technique
Sitting is a good tactic, but its not for me,try walking slowly through the woods, really slow, like your deer hunting,i find it much more satisfying than just sitting still. Its good practice for deer season and you find out which trees are holding more squirrels and which trees tend to hang on to there nuts the longest.Still hunting them is much more fun to me,its a real challenge this time of year.Try both though......good luck
Find yourself a secluded patch of woods with a few Hickory or Oak tree's...Sit still and wait..Patience will pay off when it comes to Squirrel hunting. They key is waiting for ';them'; to move not you......
most of these answers are spot on but the lazy sneaky way i used to shoot them was hang a steel mesh bag full of nuts up on a branch make them work for their nuts, build a hide and take your pot shots ps make sure you dont use plastic mesh theyl just tear the bag and nuts will pour out

Does anyone know what brand of .22 bulllets the kid uses on relentless pursuit to hunt squirrels?

The kid on relentless pursuit uses a special bullets that you can see fly through the air. I think they are called fireflite bullets or some thing. if you know please send me a link where i can buy someDoes anyone know what brand of .22 bulllets the kid uses on relentless pursuit to hunt squirrels?
.22 Tracer rounds im guessing. Look at a gun show or pawnshop and see if you can get them ordered from there if they don't have any. They are kinda high online.Does anyone know what brand of .22 bulllets the kid uses on relentless pursuit to hunt squirrels?
Before you commit to buying these, be sure they're legal in your state of residence. These could start a brush fire under certain conditions, and that's no good for anybody.
