Best time to hunt squirrel?

What the best time to hunt squirrel when it is the morning afternoon or late afternoon and wet or dry and warm hot or chillyBest time to hunt squirrel?
I have found the best time of day is in the morning. Squirrels do not move about much if it is raining very hard. Of course, if it is raining very hard, you will not likely be out in the woods hunting them. A light drizzling rain does not seem to bother them but can make hunting them a bit dicey for the hunter. A very good time to hunt squirrels is on the first nice morning following a couple, or more, rainy days. They will have not been out hunting food as much during the inclement weather and the first nice morning, they will want get out and find something to eat. They seem to favor cool days over warm days for their forages. I guess when it is warm out, they are somewhat less active and would just as soon be in a cool place resting. Wind is your enemy. Squirrels do not like wind. I think it has to do with their ability to hear preditors.

Some calls seem to be more effective than others. I have had luck with the whistle that mimics the sound of a baby squirrel in distress. I have also had good luck using a couple of poker chips with the rough edges. I use two of them and rub them together to make the sound of a squirrel cutting nuts. Carry some hard corn in your pocket and toss a few kernals into the leaves on the ground to sound like cuttings hitting the ground. I prefer to stand next to a tree and watch for squirrels. It seems to make you blend into the surroundings better then if you were standing out by yourself.

A few additional words of advice, use camoflage, look lots and move little.Best time to hunt squirrel?
The best time to hunt squirrels is the first hour of daylight and the two hours before sunset. Hunt them during late summer and early fall for best results. They seem to like weather in the 60s - 80s. Hunt them before and directly after a rain. They will be moving in search of food, and if it is wet you will be quieter in the woods.

You can find them during this time in pecan, hickory, walnut, and later in oak trees. Listen for a grinding noise that sounds like two quarters being rubbed together (the rough sides). This is the sound of them ';cutting'; nuts. Once you locate the tree in which they are cutting, watch for tiny bits of nutshells falling. Look directly up from where they fall and you should be able to locate the squirrel. The leaves are still on this time of year so also watch for shaking leaves. If the cuttings are fresh you can sometimes smell them before you find the right tree. Take a green nut and scrape it with your knife. That is the smell you will recognize in the woods.

A shotgun is the best selection for this time of year. The squirrels tend to be moving a lot and present difficult targets in the leafy canopy. Also, there is usually more than one squirrel in a good tree. After your first shot, mark the squirrel that dropped and then wait about five minutes. If there is another squirrel in the tree, it should begin moving around again.

Have fun.

get to your spot before the sun comes up and just sit and wait until it comes up for about 45 mins...during that time you should be able to spot some coming down from the trees and/or running around the ground to get to another tree or food source...you could wait longer if you want or just get your things and walk quitly on path ways to other big trees around you to spot them out...when it gets too warm for you, thats when they feel warm too and would be gazing the sun or digging around on the ground...some will be on the acorn trees if they are ready and others would be on the ground, either eating and digging or chasing each other around...i always like it better in the mornings becuase you get to snipe them with the 22 easier...and then its pretty much shotgun for the rest of the day....they come out hot or cold...and dry or damp...but if its too wet and cold, they would most likely still be snugged in the trees....
Just after the sun comes up in early fall and spring. Spring is not that good because you could end up separating a mom from her babies, but it is good hunting. I prefer fall because they are fat and waiting to sit on that old oak branch and catch some rays especially after a rainy night or very cold spell. Late evening is good too.
The best time is in the fall (all daylight hours, but AM and evening is best) under oak trees. They will be ';clipping'; the acorn bunches from the tree tops and letting them fall to the ground for gathering.

Just enter the area and sit quietly until you hear the clippings hit the DRY leaves and move toward the tree that they are working. You'll see 'em.

So: During the fall season, oak trees, preferably cool, dry and not windy. They hate wind!
I find the best time is any time you can hunt.Squirrel is very good eating.

Tip: Just go Time isn`t important ,but i find cool clear weather is the best

Another tip: find the food acorns, beach nuts, hazel nuts etc.

This is the best - clear cool days setting in acorns or beach nuts.
Squirrel's are pretty active most of the day but more active in the morning and afternoons warm days seem to be best.
Mostly mornings and afternoons.*
in the early moring and late at night
