GAME COMMISSION OFFICERS PROVIDE SMALL GAME SEASON REPORTS

HUNTERS REMINDED ABOUT 鈥楽HARING THE HARVEST鈥?br>

HARRISBURG 鈥?Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officers (WCOs) report this week that field conditions are promising for this Saturday鈥檚 start of the statewide squirrel and grouse seasons, which run from Oct. 14 to Nov. 25.

An overwhelming majority of WCOs rated squirrel hunting prospects as good to excellent. Grays are plentiful statewide; fox squirrels are also in good supply in many western counties and increasing in southcentral counties. There also seems to be increased opportunity this fall to take black-phased gray squirrels in some northern tier counties.

In McKean County, WCO Rose Luciane reported, ';There seems to be a lot of black-phased grays this year.'; Fellow McKean County WCO Tom Sabolcik also added, ';Squirrel numbers seem to be at an all-time high with sightings of black squirrels on the increase.';

Squirrels are one of the state鈥檚 most under-utilized game resources. In 1985, more than a half million Pennsylvanians hunted squirrels. Today, squirrel hunters number about a quarter million. Some have speculated that this decrease in hunting pressure has influenced the eastern expansion of fox squirrels, which are occupying more and more territory east of their established western Pennsylvania range, especially in southcentral counties.

The prospect of hunting fox squirrels, which are North America鈥檚 largest tree squirrel, appeals to hunters in eastern counties. They represent something new, different and fondly reminiscent of the gray squirrels most young hunters cut their teeth on. But the fox squirrel鈥檚 penchant to inhabit open forests with little understory makes it a challenging quarry. In addition, finding a huntable population of fox squirrels on their expanding frontier may also be tough. You may be better off hunting fox squirrels in established range.

Monroe County WCO Victor Rosa had sage advice for people who didn鈥檛 scout for squirrels but plan to head afield. ';Hunters should look for squirrels where the acorns are falling,'; Rosa said. ';Wait and they will come.';

WCOs report squirrels are also abundant where hickory nuts and beechnuts are available, and in woodlots adjacent to cornfields.

Game Commission Executive Director Vern Ross is encouraging the Commonwealth鈥檚 hunters to take a young person squirrel hunting.

';Even though the special youth squirrel hunt has passed, you can still take your daughter or nephew or grandson afield for squirrels,'; Ross said. ';It鈥檚 a unique opportunity to spend quality one-on-one time with someone you care about at a time when Pennsylvania鈥檚 forests are simply breathtaking.';Wheres a good place to squirrel hunt near Wayne county?
