What type of weapon/ammo do you like to use when you hunt small game, such as rabbit and squirrel??

12 or 20 gauge with 6 shot What type of weapon/ammo do you like to use when you hunt small game, such as rabbit and squirrel??
Most people use a shotgun anywhere from a ..410 to a 12. The name says it all shot. Naturally, shotguns give you a better chance of hitting your target because you have more than one projectile although with a little practice a .22 rifle can be equally effective for hunting rabbit or squirrel but you have to be aware of what is beyond your target moreso with a .22 rifle than a shotgun because the .22 can travel up to a mile and still be lethal where as the shotgun with # 6 shot can only be lethal up to 50 yards or less.

for rabbit and squirrel I always use # 6 shot. If you use any smaller shot size you may find yourself with a tooth ache, biting down on shot is not at all plesant. Always remember, the smaller the shot, the more shot you have in a shotshell and the less penetrating power you have. Because rabbit and squirrel are fairly larger game than quail or dove, you need a little more hard hitting power and that is where the 6's come in. They don't have the velocity of 7 1/2 or 8 but they hit harder. You don't need high velocity to kill a rabbit or a squirrel.

Any Brand of .22 long rifle ammo will be effective for taking small game. My choice is Winchester Super Points (also known as hollow points), But Remington also has superp .22 long rifle ammo.

Rabbit and Squirrel can be very elusive even when wounded. It is in your best intrest to respect the animals you hunt and aways try to take them cleanly and as quickly as possible. Using small shot to hunt these animals will more than likey mortally wound them but allow them to escape and die later.

All in all good sportsmanship determines a good hunter from a bad hunter. Respect the animals you hunt, abide by the laws or your hunting area, and most importantly: Be Safe and encourage others to be safe as well.

good hunting and good luck. What type of weapon/ammo do you like to use when you hunt small game, such as rabbit and squirrel??
To me it depends on the weather and my mood. If snow is on the ground, I would use my 22 rifle on rabbits, they tend to run and sit when you kick one up. Then pick him off. But if its clear and I'm hunting in the sticks I like to use my shotgun. 12 ga pump Mossberg, also since I am usually shooting in the air at squirrels in a tree, I tend to favor the shotgun as well if nothing else for safety. Its possible to miss and that 22 can travel a long distance in the air. Shotgun shot does not go that far and gives me piece of mind when shooting skyward. You should always know what is in front of your muzzle.
in the fall ...with leafs and ground cover... good 12 or 20 g shotgun.... rabbits and tree rats-#6 low brass

After the leafs fall ... .22 for squirrels... round nose lead bullets.

I have shot bunnies with the .22... but with dogs, running rabbits are a little easier to kill with a shotgun.
A 22 long Rifle, 12 or 20 gauge shotgun.* Use number 4 bird shot for rabbit, and number 6 for squirrel.*
Ruger 10/22 .22LR rifle with either Remington 36 grain hollow point or Federal 36 grain hollow point.
I use a 12 gauge Remington 1100 with either #6 or #8 shot. Although a 20 gauge is just as good on small game.
Dynamite, followed only by a howitzer.
i have used everthing from a .22 all the way up to a .270 but i myself like to use a 12 gauge pump shotgun
17 HMR in a Marlin, good up to about 300 yards on the silly wabbit
