Im thinking about getting a redbone coonhound for squirrel hunting. Will it also make a good companion too?

We have two redbones. We use them for coon, bear, and bobcat hunting. They make great companions. One of ours likes to jump up a lot and loves getting attention, while the other is a calm affectionate dog. They are some of the better hounds we have had in a while.

They are not the kind of dog you would want to have in the city, but no hound is. They need to be tied up well of kept in a strong kennel or they will get free and be hunting without you.Im thinking about getting a redbone coonhound for squirrel hunting. Will it also make a good companion too?
Coon Hounds in general make great companions. The only time I wouldn't recommend it is if they were used extensively as bear hunting dogs. Are you looking at a purebred? Over the last several years, many in the coon dog community have cross bred coon hounds with Whippets or Grey Hounds, mostly for speed in field trials. These can sometimes be a bit high strung.Im thinking about getting a redbone coonhound for squirrel hunting. Will it also make a good companion too?
If you can stand the baying and the yowling, then yes they are. I had two growing up. I used them for bear and raccoon. They followed me around everywhere I went, slept at the foot of my bed,and were great companions.

The only downside, is when they catch a smell of a rabbit in the middle of the night and won't quit baying.
you can find smaller breeds that are bred for squirrels...if you have the room and dont mind the barking then i guess a coonhound would be ok...a fellow worker just got a mountain cur - feist mix for squirrels and he is a bit smaller than a coonhound...
They make great companions! They are people pleasers. Mine loves to go for rides, sleeps with me, etc.
