Does anyone have any tips on hunting squirrels?

Like how to atrack them and where to find them.Does anyone have any tips on hunting squirrels?
SilverPhoenix got it right. When I go squirrel hunting, I see deer (like I did today). And when I go deer hunting, I see an abundance of squirrels that I never saw when I was squirrel hunting.

But, on a more serious note. The best way to hunt squirrels is to still hunt them. Squirrels are pretty sly and they see you coming from a distance and will generally just hide on the other side of a tree. If you simply sit down and take a nice long break under a nice big tree, they will start to move around and come out from hiding, because they don't see you moving anymore.

So the answer is, take a seat, relax, maybe even read a book. In 15 minutes time, they will come out chattering and playing with each other. Then you can blast them!

Well, assuming the area you are hunting is known to have squirrels, the best bet is to settle down. Make yourself comfortable against a tree or stump, and stop moving around.

It won't take them long to forget the disturbance you made getting in place.

If you shoot one, don't be in a rush to pick it up. Just mentally mark the fall for laters, and stay still. Others will soon be out feeding again. A buddy and I once took five of them without moving from where we were sitting.

There are commercial squirrel calls that mimic the sound of a bushytail barking. But you can achieve the same thing with a couple of quarters. Just rattle them around it your hand. Squirrels are very curious, and will often show themselves looking for the ';intruder.';

If you're hunting with a buddy, you can sucker them into showing themselves. When one is spooked it usually goes to the far side of the tree and freezes. If one of you moves to that side the squirrel will run to the opposite side---where you are waiting in ambush.
You will need to get out in the woods before the squirrel season and look for trees that offer them stuff to eat. Different trees will offer food at different times. Find out which trees bud first if you are hunting in the spring. Squirrels are looking for the buds to eat. If you are hunting in the fall, look for trees that produce nuts. Various trees will produce their crop of nuts at different times so know where the nut producing trees are located and which nuts come ripe first. Once you locate the nut trees, look for the nearest water. Squirrels do not drink much water since they get the majority of the water that they need from their food. But, they will occasionally look for water. Besides, the trees nearest the water will have the most liquid in the nuts. After finding the nut trees, look on the ground for cuttings where they have been eating nuts and dropping the cuttings on the ground under the trees. When you find a bunch of cuttings, there is where you want to be early in the morning before daylight. Look a lot, listen a lot and move very little. If you don't see any squirrels after 20 or 30 minutes in one spot, move along a couple hundred yards and again stand very still, look listen and watch for another 20 or 30 minutes. Keep doing this until you have your bag limit.

As for attracting them, I have had the best luck with two different calls. The first is a whistle type of call. It looks like a large version of the whistle that is in dog toys. I don't remember what it is called but you will have to look in outdoor catalogs to find it. You make the sound by sucking or inhaling on it. Two loud calls followed by a series of shorter and softer calls. While making the shorter and softer calls, you beat the ground wiht a piece of brush that you cut in the area. What you are simulating is the sound of a baby squirrel that has been grabbed by a hawk. the hawk grabs the baby squirrel, flys to the ground toi get a better grip on it and then he flys away with it. Beating the ground with some brush sounds like the hawk wings beating the ground as he trys to reposition the squirrel before flying away. When the adult squirrels hear this, they will come out to bark and fuss at the hawk. You listen to them bark and watch for their flicking tails and then shoot them.

Another ';call'; that I use successfully is a pair of poker chips that have ridges around the edges. You just rub them together to make the sound of a squirrel cutting nits. You can help the deception by carrying some hard corn in your pocket and every once in a while toss a few bits out on the dry leaves while you are scraping the poker chips together to sound like cuttings hitting the ground. Don't throw it out there in bunches, just toss out a couple at a time. When squirrels are cutting on nuts, just a few pieces of cuttings will hit the ground at a time. Other squirrels will come out to see who is stealing and eating their food.
they make a squirrel call it's good for locating them it'll make them bark at u when they think another squirrel is invading their territory and then u just sit down and wait on them. i like to u a rifle with a scope and i like to use shorts shells the less noise u make the more squirrels u will see i like to call it the silent killer.
when they bark from the tops of trees get ur gun steadied up against a tree. Just common sense i guess. But if u have time the day before go out to where u will be squirrel hunting and look for nests and big den trees. This will jelp a lot at the end of the day because all u have to do is wait for them to go home and pop the little bastards. lol

if u want to attrack them throw field corn in the woods in dead trees or w/e and set up a good shooting bench. When they come to eat shoot them!
hey, its ur choice to eat tree rat. if u do u r going 2 want to have a handful of bird seed like 20m away and shoot at them. they are really dumb my buddy goes after them w/ a .22 and he limited out in less than a hour. good luck
Whenever i go hunting, there would be a squirrel barking at me from a tree. So i would also suggest to go deer hunting. lol. Just bring a smaller rifle like a .22 or a bb or something.
I rub 2 quarters together as a call. If one is hidding onthe other side of a tree throw a rock to the oppisite side of the tree. He will move to your side to hide from the noise.
Yea go deer hunting. LOL!!! They show up right on que. Little a55es. Then they sit there and bark at ya. Go scurrying around and scare everything away.
set up corn, or bird seed

what will you be using to hunt them
