Squirrel hunting in chicago?

me and some friends are going to do some early squirrel hunting here in the city of chicago and i was wondering if them squirrelies are good to eat or sumthing cause im not going to just kill a squirrel and leave it there i want to eat in and make a coat out of his fur so what do u think?Squirrel hunting in chicago?
Squirrels, if cooked properly, make great table fare. However, if you planning on eating them, you DO NOT want the ones dwelling in or near the city. Animals are what they eat, and in the city their main diet comes from dumpsters and refuse. They are known, in a lot of areas, as tree rats.(They basically are rats with a fluffy tails that climb trees). If you have your heart set on them, find a nice wooded area where they have access only to natural forage. I also would not reccomend hunting in the city for safety purposes.

I hunted them in Illinois when I was a kid. Never cared for the taste of them.
CAJUN SQUIRREL STEW








4-5 squirrels, cleaned and de-headed


1/4 lb (1 stick) margarine


1 cup chopped onions


1/2 c chopped bell pepper


4 cloves garlic (chopped)


1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce


1 tbsp. finely chopped shallots


1 tbsp. finely chopped parsley


1/2 cup red wine


1 tbsp. flour (heaping)


Tony Chacharie's Creole Seasoning


(or salt, red and black pepper)








Cut each squirrel into pieces. Season well with Tony's or salt and pepper. Melt margarine in a large cast iron pot and fry squirrels until browned all over and they start to stick. Add onions, bell peppers and garlic.





When vegetables are soft, add 1 cup of cold water, and Worcestershire sauce. Cover the pot tightly and let simmer on very low heat 1 hour. Stir well and add burgundy wine. Recover and cook until tender. Remove cooked squirrel from pot, leaving as much juice in the pot as possible.





Add 1 tbsp. flour to a few ounces water and mix well. Add this mixture, chopped onion tops, parsley to the gravy. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring constantly until thickened.


Serve over steaming rice
Why don't you just hunt the bogongs instead and leave the squirrels in peace.
Squirrel buffalo wings are the best.... squirrel pancakes are pretty good too.... make a coon skin cap out of squirrel fur and a fur coat too..... sounds good to me.....
Depends on what kind of squirrels you are hunting. The kind like, ';Zombie'; are illegal to hunt, make a poor meal since they are usually full of sh%26amp;t, and an even poorer pelt (too thinskinned) to make a coat out of.


If you are talking about squirrels in the animal kingdom, there's not a whole lot of meat on the hoof (er, paw, I mean). The pelt is too thin to make a decent coat out of; plus you would need a whole lot of them.


Lastly, I doubt you can hunt in the city limits of Chicago. I suspect if you crank a round off, you will find yourselt the quarry of ill tempered, blue suited officers. . .
I'm pretty sure that breaking out a gun or bow ';in the city of Chicago'; would be a very bad idea. Hunting with anything other than a gun or bow is not legal in most states. The cops tend to get real nervous when they see a weapon out in the open in a major city.
First I would check the laws regarding hunting in Chicago city limits, and since more than likely firearms aren't allowed you should make sure whatever weapon you use causes a minimum of suffering to the animal. Always remember to use good hunting ethics.





From my experience, squirrel is best when you use it in a stew or soup of some kind. Obviously, you're going to need a fairly significant amount of them to give whatever you're cooking a decent percentage of meat. I've never prepared it, but you can look online for various recipes.





I wouldn't attempt to make anything out of it since you're going to need a great many squirrels to make any sort of garment (more than you could possibly keep from going to waste). Also, making anything from animal hide is a long and complex process.
