Tips for Squirrel Hunting?

Does anyone have any tips for squirrel hunting, such as calls, bait, or anything they are attracted to, etc.?Tips for Squirrel Hunting?
Squirrel hunting is definatly my favorite. I've got a lot of tips --- way too many to name here. email me if you'd like and I'd be more than glad to help.

Calls work very well in my experience. Knight and Hale makes the best but it's almost 20 dollars. It is the best though.

I use it as more of a locater. You can start barking and 3 or 4 squirrels within 75 yards or so may start barking.

I have used it successfully in the past for calling in squirrels - though I don't think it's really the purpose of them.

If used correctly and sparingly, they will not run away.

Bait, unless your hunting off your backyard deck, I wouldn't waste my time with bait. You hunt on a calm day when you can see branches swinging, leaves shuffling, or hear them chewing on nuts.

You are targeting trees (and to a lesser extent water and crop fields): find some pictures and know what they look like.

1. mulberrry / berry type trees in the summer (if you are as lucky as missouri to have a long season)

2. walnuts in midsummer

3. hickories, walnuts, and acorns in the mid-summer and early fall

4. accorns in the winter (and whatever else they can find)

Still hunt on old trails in the summer and early fall, stopping every few steps to look and listen. The leaves on the trees will let you sneak right up to them if you are quiet and slow enough.

When the trees fall on the ground, you're going to be sitting a lot more. They can see and hear you comming. so you wait for them.

I don't like hunting winter because they don't move too much in the cold - just a few hours during the warmest part of the day. Here in the midwest, the season kinda unofficially ends with the start of deer season in early november.

Yeah be quiet

Squirrels always run away from bait calls scare them. A semi auto 22 is your best gun for squirrels. It dosent kick and has a high rate of fire.
Go deer hunting :) ...trust me you will get hoarded by squirrels. If you just sit in a blind, you will easily have your limit in a couple hours...God i hate squirrels, specially red, pudgy squirrels that don't leave you alone.
Wear a jacket with a hoodie, it will help keep from getting neck cramps.

Try using a dog, even if it is not designed for squirrels. Have it go around the tree. If the dog is on the opposite side, the squirrel will move around the tree and usually give you a good shot.

Apples or corn on the husk. Check laws for baiting though.

Use a shotgun when the leaves are out, a rifle when they have fallen.
