Whats your favorite gun for hunting squirrel?

and why?Whats your favorite gun for hunting squirrel?
The anti's sure did come out of the wood work... if they don't like something, they need to keep their sorry opinions to their selves.

But.. back to your question (:

Right now, I'm using an Escort 20 ga semi auto with 7/8 oz loads since that's all I got.

If I had a choice in the matter, I'd use my grandpa's old .22 lr bolt action (don't know the model of it, he got it when he was my age)

dwdrummer06-- never thought of makin gumbo with squirrels... once I get enough, gotta try it. Thanks!

grow up. A responsible hunter won't take a shot unless he/she is sure of it. And that's why you NEED to know what is beyond your target for at least 2 miles. duh..Whats your favorite gun for hunting squirrel?
I really do wish for an age limit to ask and answer questions on the hunting section. Far too many ignorant juveniles have unfortunately wasted your time.

It's amazing how many idiots would rather eat beef, pork, and chicken that has been raised in horribly cruel conditions, pumped full of chemicals and hormones, and then slaughtered in mass to sell at local stores. No thank you.....I'd rather have fresh meat from a good hunt. (At least the animal has a chance to get away, instead of being raised and sent to a slaughter house.)

As for the question, I agree with those who say a 22LR. Also, consider the 22 Magnum for squirrels.

If you have the money for it (around $1,000), consider the FN Five Seven. It shoots the 5.7x28 round at velocities of around 2,000 fps (Might be a little too much power for squirrels, but still a lot of fun).
My favorite is an oldie. A Mossberg 144D. It is a heavy barreled .22 caliber box fed bolt action. I have a 3 to 9 Weaver on it. I have shot 10 shot groups into a 3/4 in circle at 100 yards. Weather has to be perfect but when everything is right it is a tack drive SOB.

Second choice is a Ruger 10/22 with a 4 power Weaver.

I have used a 7MM Remington Mag but there isn't a whole lot left for the stew pot. JK, smallest thing with that rifle was a Jackrabbit at just under 300 yards. If you can stand the recoil it is a fun varmint gun. Reloading your own helps with cost and recoil.
.22 rifle (Ruger 10/22 is a good one, but any will do) - reasons: low cost, accurate, and effective. If you use sub-sonic ammo, you will find them pretty quiet, (if that's a concern); they are slightly more expensive.

Pellet gun (where you need to) - reasons: lower cost, effective, quieter.
I absolutely love to killlll animals. God designed us to kill animals. I will kill an two extra animals this season for every one post someone says something stupid and cute about not killing cuddly little animals. Some I eat, some I bring home, show my kids, take pictures of them then explain to my kids what they are, then throw them in the trash can!!

Back to your question. Sorry for the outburst. I like to use a .22 mag bolt action. Very accurate. Headshot, doesn`t ruin any meat, unless your going to take a photo then throw it in the trash, then just use a 3'; shotgun, very easy to hit them with that.
I use a 300! It blows their head off and also blows them 3 feet away.

P.S. I use a Winchester 300 short mag

NO I AM KIDDING PLEASE READ BELOW.

People have died before from people shooting at a squirrel, and missing. ( With a 22) Any bullet can travel at least a mile. PEOPLE HAVE DIED!!
grandpa's single shot Stevens Model 66/Ranger 35 chambered for .22 short, long, and long rifle. that's all i ever knew for blastin squirrel.

edit- dam look at all those people criticizing this poor guy. i could murder get less criticism.
.22LR Marlin 60 is mine. The .22 is an ideal rifle for squirrel. The other options are high powered .177 airguns with hunting pellets, and maybe a .17 caliber rifle, aalthough they are overkill.
As Tahoeguy said, the Marlin Model 60 is my choice of armament against the bushytailed menace.

I dare anyone to find a .22 under $1000 that will outshoot my Model 60...

Marlin Microgroove!!! Yeah!
.32 caliber BP rifle, caplock, 36'; barrel. (Actually has higher muzzle velocity than .22LR!!!)

More fun, and requires more care in shooting since you only get 1 shot at a time.
I use a .22 and use short hollow points. The bullet does not go all the way through and the knock down is better that .22lr. But don't shoot the head, the bullets tend to bounce off their skull.
I Use 22 Long Rifle, 20, 16, and 12 Gauge shotgun.* I have to many guns that I use to bother listing them all here.*
12 gauge because it gives hunters a greater opportunity to hit the squirrel.
My 20 gauge Benelli super sport. I use it becuase it is light, has little recoil, and it has a nice gel pad on it.
shot-gun

squirrel gumbo is mighty tasty but I perfer rabbit. Not many of ya'll from the South I guess.
24 Savage or Stevens. 22 single shot upper, 410 single shot under.
